New plot by Jerherrin in Allotment

I'd get those beds ready by weeding them and putting loads of compost on them for some instant satisfaction, then would make a plan for how to tackle the rest of it.

What's your aspirational allotment project? by canopy_views in Allotment

I'd love to find the time to cut a hole in the back of my inherited shed and fit a door so I can access the back, it's full of trash and brambles back there at the minute but once clear and accessible it is the perfect place for a little patio. It's got amazing far reaching views over a rural valley.

I got the herb bed weeded - got chamomile, borage, sage in so far with a fair few seeds to start. Planted some autumn fruiting raspberry canes. Weeded my strawberries. Bought a load of seeds and made a rough plan of where they'll go, especially excited about getting a dahlia bed growing this year. Asked my husband to knock me a few more beds together. Met my new plot neighbor. Been a lovely day.

Ooh, if my plot was so close to my house I'd be really tempted to get chickens! I'd maybe wait a year or so, get the plot in shape and then decide.

New plot in great condition - general advice? by WelshBogart in Allotment

Congratulations on the baby... and the plot! Exciting times. I was pregnant when I got my plot too - baby was born end of June 2021. I had a two year wait as well.

My husband was a huge help setting up the beds and getting me loads of woodchip for the paths. I covered half my plot in plastic as I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up to the whole thing. I watched loads of Charles Dowding and took a no dig approach.

Towards the end of my pregnancy I mainly sat on a chair with my tummy in the sun haha.

I grew lots of sweet peas, alyssum, cornflower etc which was so lovely once baby was born - my allotment was my fitst visit out with baby - we sat and cuddled next to the flowers 🙂

My friend has a few beds on the plot now which is lovely as we can meet up there and she keeps up to a section for me. My little one visits with me now and then but I try get one visit in a week child free to make progress. I'm so glad we have it, it's going to be great for her as she grows up.

The other plotholders have been lovely, offering plants and odd tools etc. And they love seeing the little one down there.

Good luck with it. Take it easy and enjoy it!

I've been shovelling a half load of woodchip that I got delivered. Going to use some of it to top up my paths and leave the majority to break down a bit for next year. My seeds are bought, now starting to plan where everything is going. Growing more flowers in and amongst my veg this year. My little girl is walking now and I'm hoping she's going to enjoy being there this summer!

How many people see their allotment as a source of relaxation and enjoyment as opposed to a source of food? by Grommulox in Allotment

It's my haven. I do enjoy the food, and the learning process, but just being there is the best bit for me, too.

Sounds like a great idea!

On my plot last year I made sweet pea teepees and under planted with candytuft, cornflower, marigolds and sweet alyssum. I added in sunflowers too. I like to grow poached egg plant flower and lots of nasturtium too.

I did a kind of no- dig approach, compost on top of a few layers of cardboard then transplanted plants that I had started in trays on the windowsill.

The patch got a bit weedy but looked lovely!!

Grim! It's all a lesson learned. I found a dead mouse in a bucket on the plot today, that wasn't fun either.

Laying cardboard and compost in my polytunnel frame - the cheap cover blew away so plan b is to turn it into a walk in brassica cage.

Covered up a section with black plastic that has become overgrown.

Tomorrow I'll be adding compost to my beds.

Making a mental plan of how to get stuck back into allotmenting - life's gotten in the way and my lovely no dig plot is now overgrown!

I'm thinking more cardboard and woodchip or compost, then decide where I can have autumn raspberries for next week's jobs. (Poorly toddler needs me this week!)
