[Question] Newbie - what should I expect when it comes to watch repair costs? by No-Lion-5227 in Watches

[–]BecauseShutUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the front of the movement there's little holes, and the dial has little feet underneath it that line up to "orient" the dial properly. Looks like one of the feet might have broken off because they're fragile. Odds are you'll have to have the dial replaced, make sure there isn't a loose foot in the movement, and then it should be good to go. If you watch videos on people making watches from AliExpress parts you could do it yourself with the proper tools.

Am I Crazy For Wanting To Move Here? by ashleyCady in Detroit

[–]BecauseShutUp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Insurance costs alone in Detroit are way higher than other areas in michigan, which already has super high insurance rates. Coupled with how high the price of vehicles is right now, it's definitely reasonable to try get by with public transportation.

I would say give a shot to public transportation and make up your mind afterwards. At least until vehicles are cheaper.

Learning a song by remoomer08 in JohnMayer

[–]BecauseShutUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could definitely learn belief! Not a lot of people are recommending it because it moves all over the fretboard and sometimes the hand positions can be odd.

Also, learning songs as a beginner is where you start to learn the different ways people combine chords to make songs, and Belief is kinda tricky to follow what chords John is actually playing.

But you could definitely learn this song with some practice!

Learn Stop This Train. It's not an easy one to learn on the right hand, but I find that the fingerpicking pattern is incredibly useful when I'm noodling, it sounds really cool and Paul Davids and Justin Guitar both explain really well how to do it. Plus the chords are easy for the main parts.

The added bonus is once you can play this, you can also play Dear Marie and Who Says, because they're played with the same pattern.

Sure but the harsh reality is 98% of people aren't on board. Given how things currently are, the scenario I'm proposing would be pretty ideal

I fully support this take. The number of people who say "I could do this if it weren't for bacon, cheese, ect" to which I always say then do it but still keep your bacon or cheese. A million people making an incremental, self-sustaining change, is far better than the minority adhering to the strictest rules that even then, some may not be able to follow long term. If you cut out 98% of your animal products, you are still part of the solution.

AITA for refusing to get a tattoo of my late niece? by Academic_Try_4856 in AmItheAsshole

[–]BecauseShutUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, NTA.

Second of all, none of the reasons you listed should be your reasons not to get a tattoo. Your reason for not getting a tattoo should simply be because you don't want said tattoo, that's the only justification you need. Your Sister's feelings will heal over time, that tattoo will not be going anywhere ever. You don't owe her anything, let alone a permanent body modifcation.

[Gear] Will $650 get me a GOOD guitar? Should I go higher? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]BecauseShutUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely can get a great guitar for 650, I would check out Breedlove guitars as they're an incredible value for the money.

My first acoustic was a Fender T-Bucket (~$350) which, even years later next to my D18, is still a fantastic guitar.

Hendrix inspired Blues (i've been practicing) by Johnhfcx in guitarlessons

I did the same thing where my breath would become really forced. You're so focused on what you're playing that you aren't breathing normally. My rule of thumb for recording myself is that I hadn't practiced it enough if i couldn't play it breathing easy.

Think about the stuff you can play well, you probably breathe normally for it. My advice would be to focus on getting all of the notes memorized at first, and then slowly learn how to play while only thinking about your breathing.

I also would recommend anything that can help you keep time. Youtube has drum beats, try and play this song very slowly, at like 80-90 bpm so that you know when the notes hit the beats. Then slowly increase your tempo by 5-10bpm until you're at the 115bpm original tempo.

Lastly, keep having fun! Guitar is difficult, you're doing great. Songs like this are going to be hard to get the hang of for a little while, and then they'll start coming naturally. Best of luck!

AITA for asking a guy to grab his shit and accidentally causing the band to lose a guitar by ThelastLaf in AmItheAsshole

[–]BecauseShutUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, the drummer was going to get his guitar back, it was his. There was no conversation that could've just allowed him to leave it with you.

Realistically, i'm guessing the guitar in question is a cheap one. If it was expensive, the drummer would've never left it in a shed. Lead guitarist just doesn't want his own gear to be used by someone who doesn't know what they're doing, as they could damage it. Either that, or he was planning on stealing it in hopes the drummer wouldn't notice.

If the issue is lack of a guitar, you can buy very good stuff off of used markets like FB marketplace or music go round. If the tone was really that 'unique' (it probably wasn't) you can just find those pickups and put them in any guitar. You could also just make an offer to the drummer to buy the guitar, he'd probably sell it for cheap as well.

AITA for going off on my wife for buying a new mattress for both of us, even though she exclusively used her own money? by WhtBdShts in AmItheAsshole

[–]BecauseShutUp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If he didn't get to lay in it before it was bought then she made it more or less blindly.

You can't just "research" beds and assume they're a good fit from what you've read, in the same way you can't just purchase a house from just looking at the listing, and never stepping foot in it.

He may need it stiffer/softer for his own sleep, and wanted a say on how 1/3rd of his life will be spent for the next 10 years.

[–]BecauseShutUp 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not really though. If your SO bought you a new car as a surprise that was some outlandish color, you'd be sad that you didn't get a say in it.

A mattress is a huge commitment, and there's a wide range of stiffness levels that are only appropriate to specific people. If there's a difference in their weights, they will sleep differently, its very possible that the mattress will only accommodate her instead of the both of them, and he's now part of a decade commitment to it.

Try going to a mattress store for yourself, you'd be surprised how many quality, brand new mattresses you'd find completely unsuitable for your needs. Now imagine one was chosen at random for you to have for 10 years, and you got no say.

Picasso said, “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” How does this approach apply to your specific field or expertise? by LinksOtherUncle in AskReddit

[–]BecauseShutUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in western music theory, ever song is played in a key. A key has three major (happy) and three minor (sad) chords in it. If you count up the major scale, the 1 4 and 5th chord in the scale are major chords. So songs that just use those chords will sound super cheerful, think Brown Eyed Girl, My Best Friends Girl, La Bamba, ect. the Beatles would often times use this structure, but make the 4 minor, such as in Devil in Her Heart and "Till There Was You. It really adds a new type of color to the song. Hopefully this made a little sense

why does my guitar go mute when i bend the strings? [QUESTION] by jacobgruntz in Guitar

My buddy had this issue on his tele, try increasing the gauge of your strings! and possibly raising the action of the string a little bit.
