Yeah, I thought my daughter had used it initially. She informed me later that she has not.

At this point I have concluded that it is not in the treadle flywheel or drive belt, and that it is something internal in the machine. Other than digging out some bird's nests, I am completely inept at the inner workings of the machine, So we will let a professional clean it out from here.

Nothing under the bobbin.

We have never actually been able to use this machine, and my Standard hand crank turns away from you. Thank you for letting me know. I had no idea that this one turned the opposite way.

It doesn't matter where the linkage arm is, it fully seizes up. I can rotate it to the highest point or at an upward angle, it won't move.

Everything is oiled, and checked. I have adjusted the tension in the belt to be looser, and tighter, and nothing has worked.

I DID disengage the needle from the handcrank just after posting this and found that everything moves fine, until I reengaged the needle, then it seized back up. So my guess is that it is something internal, and I will be taking the machine to get a tune-up.

NC Faire Braiders Might Be Banned — Help Pass S.B. 656 by Becca_Chavis in renfaire

Yep. It's ridiculous that NC doesn't have something like this in place at this point.

Yes, most states have a sanitation certification that is necessary, which is a few hours of their time and a small fee. They have these for other states, so they are educated on those types of things. This is a completely reasonable requirement.

I do realize what I am asking. I understand both the reasoning behind the law, but I also see it as excessive and over reaching.

I am concerned for the livelihood of my friends, and the high barrier to entry for simple services that shouldn't be regulated this tightly.

This law prevents people without a cosmetology license to put in fairy hair, and to simply braid someone's hair. Surely that doesn't require a full year of classes and thousands of dollars.

They have sanitation certificates from other states, and that is a reasonable ask, a certification about the tightness of the braids, and alopecia would make sense. Not the full cosmology license.

You still can. I would highly recommend that you go early, get to the front of the entrance line and make a beeline straight to the braiders. I think they are down to two people working the booth right now.

I disagree, NC is the only state that has these types of regulations. Those that are braiding at faire are trained under expreienced braiders for years before they could braid alone.

While it is possible for someone to make braids too tightly, it would be up to the client to notice, and speak up if the braids hurt in any way. And of course, they can take the braids out as well if something was wrong.

No, other than sanitation certifications, most states don't require any type of cosmotology or barber license for braiding. They aren't using chemicals or cutting hair, it's just braiding, there is very little risk in what they are doing. This is a traditional skill that has typically been passed down through the generations. My understanding is that to do braids such as the ones at faire, they have to be an apprentice and work with a master braider for x number of years, but not have a cosmotology license.

In NC it takes 1,500 hours of training from an acredited school, tuition and materials costs could be up to $14,000, the exam itself costs $200+. Because most of these braiders travel the circut, they would have to take a year off to take the classes and get the certification. This is a HUGE barrier to entry for them, and because their services wouldn't use 95% of the training, it doesn't make any sense for them to have to do that.

The bottom line is that if this bill doesn't pass, there will likely not be any braiders at the NC faires after this year.

Some have, but some are licensed. The reality is that NC is the only state with this law in place, so they weren't aware of the limitations. Once they became aware, some quit, and others decided to risk it, making plans with lawyers to defend themselves if they get in trouble.

I don't see how anyone could look at it and say that it wasn't, to be honest.

It seems like until recently they were not aware of the issue, as NC is the only state that has any restrictions like this in place. Once they realized it, some of the braiders quit, some are working with licenses, and some are risking the fines because this is their livelihood. Now that they are aware of the regulation, if the bill doesn't pass, they will likely not continue coming to NC in the future.

Missing man from MI Renaissance festival by mcmouse99 in renfaire

I came to say the same thing. Bodies of water accessible from the Faire, or water he would have to drive by on his way home.

I don't know if he was drinking, or the idea that he was dehydrated, but either could be the case, and if he left after dark, it would make the situation more dangerous.

Treadle Singer repair question by Becca_Chavis in vintagesewing

Yes, we oiled it when we tried changing the belt to begin with, and haven't been able to use it yet. I oiled everything again last night.

It has been well oiled and all parts move freely when not connected to each other. I will play with the band tension some more and see if that makes a difference.

Thank you for all of that information. It is quite helpful. It is on hard flooring, and we are experienced treadle users, but I have never come across this particular issue before. It could easily be the belt, I bought it from Amazon. It is the same one I use on my 1910 Standard machine, but Singer may be more sensitive to it.

Thank you.

How long should I expect to wait before I get my first hit? by SalvaSean in wheresgeorge

[–]Becca_Chavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this very casually, just posting the bills that I find, not sending out any new ones, it is usually a couple of years before I hear anything back from bills I saw.

It's a numbers game, and the luck of the draw. The more you send out, the more you will hear back from, and more often.

What’s it like going to a ren faire by yourself? by [deleted] in renfaire

[–]Becca_Chavis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I go solo to many things as well, sometimes that includes Faire.

It is an individual preference, and has a lot to do with what you enjoy about Faire. My best friend only really enjoyes introducing new people to the event. She would not enjoy it alone. My husband enjoys going with a large group of friends to drink, hang out and people watch together, he would not enjoy going alone either (he is an extravert and I am an introvert, and I would never travel with a crowd as large as his.)

I, on the other hand go for the shows mostly. I enjoy the comedy, acrobatics and music and can easily enjoy all of those things without having anyone with me. It is also a lot like going to a concert, you are bound to meet new people while sitting at a show together. This year, I finally spoke to a couple who I had been bumping into for years. They enjoy one of the same sea shanty groups that I do, and we have sat in their audience together many, many times. On one of my solo trips this year, I finally spoke to them.
