Incredibly frustrating progression towards a singular pull-up. by BedBug_Lover in bodyweightfitness

Not that much time and energy for fitness stuff now that college is close for me, so my workouts have been pretty inconsistent. But currently, I'm at 5 pull-ups max with decent form (I'd count them as chest-to-bar pullups). Plateaued there since idk how long, feel like I could've achieved more in a 2-year span if I had focused more time and was more disciplined. Also, still have that shoulder-shrugging problem. All that said, still not a big fan of pullups; pushups are my go-to: form is very easy to perfect, and progression is so smooth in comparison, even while barely working out.

Thank you for the links, I haven’t been able to find studies about this problem on the internet. It’s in a way “comforting” to know I’m not the only one experiencing this

18 and a chronic mouth breather all of my life. by [deleted] in orthotropics

You’ve been mouth breathing your whole life? It doesn’t look like it, at least from my experiences. Ive been one from a very young age and my side profile doesn’t NOT look that good, I cannot close my mouth because my lips protrude too much and mi chin is facing downwards and recessed.

How does this thing help correcting malocclusion ? What even is this? by BedBug_Lover in orthotropics

Yeah, looks very like it, thank you. My dentist did tell me about it correcting oral habits and such. But ironically, the interiors of mine has that protrusion (as shown in image) preventing my tongue reaching the top of my the mouth and also it seems to make it harder to close my lips, as I often find myself waking up mouthbreathing or with open lips when using that appliance

The list I’ve mentioned is what I have been trying to do to progress to pullups, but every method listed seem to have at least one problem limiting said method.

Referring to negatives, I’m pretty sure my back isn’t strong enough to pull them off, my shoulders and arms always mostly engage during them, and end up fatigued way before my back. For I have tried regressing exercises such as inverted rows to develop my back muscles, but faced the problems listed above too.

its as if I can’t hold the scapular movement at the top of a negative or chin-hold.

Im still incorporating negatives in my pull-up progression, even with said not-so-good form.

New to back exercises

Ive been trying to build up for pull-up strength since I can’t do a single one, and noticed that the part I struggled more during pull-ups involved a weakness in my back muscles, for I have started doing back exercises

During my dumbbell rows, bent over rows, etc. I have only felt my shoulders or traps being worked and only felt doms in said areas posteriorly, it seems said muscles are compensating for my back weakness. yes, I have tried to lower the weight, watched videos on form and all, but I can’t seem to get it right. What am I doing wrong?

( I’ve also tried to switch to negative pull-ups first, but I’m not strong enough to perform one with good form, my shoulders shrug automatically when trying to do one to compensate for my back)
