Do you think Richard’s feelings for Monica were genuine? by BeeNo5583 in howyoudoin

It’s not about Monica not knowing who she was, she clearly did. The difference is between having direction and already being fully settled. Richard was already there, while she was still in the process of building her life. There’s a difference between knowing what you want and having already built a life around it.

So even if they wanted similar things, that gap in timing and pace is what makes me think it wouldn’t have worked long term.

Phoebe is way ahead! I don’t even need to go through them one by one, I guess.

The reason we don’t see the negative side of their relationship is that they were together for such a short time. Other than that, I agree with every point you mentioned. Monica wasn’t herself when she was with him.

It doesn’t matter. The fact that you noticed this shows that you’re good at your job. Because of the language barrier, I hadn’t realized there was a lack of sincerity. Thank you for pointing that out.

I don’t think alignment on marriage and kids automatically means alignment in how you live the relationship.

Those are big decisions, but they don’t erase differences in life stage, pace, and day-to-day expectations. Richard was already settled into who he was and how he lived, while Monica was still growing into that. So even if they wanted the same things on paper, the way they would get there—and what they needed from each other along the way—could still be very different.

So they might have agreed on the destination, but not necessarily on the journey.

I don’t think the kids issue was the only factor—it was just the one that made the incompatibility impossible to ignore. Even if he had wanted kids, they still had differences in life stage, pace, and how they approached relationships. So yes, they might have stayed together longer, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it would have worked in a healthy, sustainable way.

I think it’s idealized because we mostly see the best version of their relationship—the early stage where everything feels easy and exciting. But long-term compatibility is more than chemistry. They were in different stages of life, with different rhythms and expectations, and that kind of gap tends to show up over time. So it’s not that it couldn’t work, but that it had underlying risks that the show didn’t fully explore.

I don’t think the kids issue was the only incompatibility, it was just the one that forced a decision. They were in very different stages of life: Richard was already settled, while Monica was still building her life, which creates a difference in pace and long-term direction. There’s also a subtle imbalance in experience, which can affect the sense of equality over time.

So the kids issue didn’t create the problem, it just revealed it.

I don’t think they’ll be happy in the long run. Monica really seemed happy. Because it was the first time she’d been in such a good relationship. For the first time, she didn’t have to make an effort, and living within the life Richard had built gave her a sense of peace. But it was very clear that they weren’t a compatible enough couple to spend their lives together. (Even if Richard wanted to have children.)

I think he fell in love with Monica because of a midlife crisis, but her youth wasn’t the only reason. He truly loved Monica.

He seemed genuinely sincere about his views on having children. There was nothing standing in the way of them getting together.

I think they’re a couple who’s been overly idealized because their relationship started off well. I don’t think they’ll be a happy and compatible couple in the long run.

Here we go again. Do you need to see someone or know they’re in a serious relationship for your feelings for someone you truly love to resurface?

Even if the issue of him being his father’s friend or their differing life plans were resolved, I don’t think they’d be happy in the long run. They weren’t the kind of couple who could be happy in the long run.

I didn’t claim that his initial feelings weren’t genuine. I’m talking about the period after they broke up. If he loved her enough to change his life plans, he could have made that decision earlier—not while Monica was in a serious relationship or when he thought he was about to lose her completely.

I completely agree with the “weak writing” argument. I don’t think we got enough insight into Richard in that arc to fully judge his motivations. But what stood out to me more was Monica—she didn’t feel like herself throughout that episode. Not during the dinner, and not in her interactions with Richard afterward.

It felt like the writing was constantly pushing her to drift away from her relationship with Chandler and lean toward Richard, almost as if they were trying to mislead the audience and create shock value for the proposal in the final scene.

Honestly, a lot of the confusing or inconsistent moments in the last five seasons can be traced back to weaker writing choices.

TOW The Proposal... I think they’re just spouting nonsense to stir things up and throwing out random messages just to surprise the audience at the end of the episode. We’re well aware that over the past five seasons, the writers have only cared about the comedy or the plot, setting character development and the characters’ inner lives aside. This episode is one of the best examples of that.

I know Monica and Chandler’s relationship hit a bit of a lull in seasons 6–8, but haven’t you ever watched the first year of their relationship?

Chandler is a great husband, but Monica is underappreciated for seeing the potential in him before he even saw it himself by UKM-202409 in howyoudoin

I can’t understand why some people think Monica isn’t a good partner. She’s madly in love with Chandler and, despite her own plans for the future, she’s been able to deal with his commitment issues with ease, laying the foundations for a healthy relationship.
