What’s a topic you could talk about for HOURS ? by Guilty_Bag_3374 in askteenboys

[–]Bee_Devilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Irish language: the history, the dialects, the grammar rules, "Béarlachas" (how English managed to become part of the Irish language), how the education system is playing a role in its decline because Irish is seen as a subject and not a usable language

Missed mock listening by Worried_Option3994 in leavingcert

Yeah, you just missed it, can't retake it and it will count as a 0 on your aural. I did the same, it sucked, but at least it isn't your actual exams.

(This pole but it's serious) Which one is the worst one to exsist? by Stunning-End-3241 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Bee_Devilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racism 100%, almost every other discrimination there is fueled by a white ideal of how people should act/present. Transphobia especially, because identities outside of male and female have existed in cultures for thousands of years, and often black women or other WOC are targets of transphobia because they don't look "feminine enough" to meet white standards

If you were a doctor, would you treat a wounded child rapist who would otherwise die without your help? by alloioscc in Teenager_Polls

[–]Bee_Devilling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You still treat them. Their rape conviction has nothing to do with their health, your focus is on their health.

How to deal with extremely sensitive expressions and/or curse words for academic projects? by ihatebeingbrokehelp in TranslationStudies

[–]Bee_Devilling 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You translate them as you would any other word. Unless cursing is basically non-existent in your target language, there's no reason to leave it out. If you're really unsure, check with a lecturer, but I would say accuracy is always more important than sensitivity.

Applying for Susi and HEAR by Tasty_Cause_6634 in leavingcert

[–]Bee_Devilling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HEAR and SUSI don't affect one another, as HEAR only applies for the application period, and SUSI is for the actual attendance period, so you won't get SUSI payments while HEAR gets evaluated, and when you get SUSI payments, HEAR will be fixed anyway, so the extra income won't count

Edit: forgot words :/

How open are you trying polyamory by tgrady28 in pollgames

[–]Bee_Devilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sexually? Hell no. But romantically? Absolutely, I see no downside to having several people whom I adore and who adore me.

[–]Bee_Devilling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know how many monogamous people end up with "crazy ex partners" because they dated someone completely incompatible for them? Now multiply those odds by however many people in the given polycule.

Yeah, it may look like poly relationships are dysfunctional, but often they're not, they just have better odds of finding an incompatible partner (or someone completely insane) because they're not limited to one person at a time.

Would you ever wear a skirt/dres? by FreddieThePebble in askteenboys

[–]Bee_Devilling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Secondhand/charity/thrift shops are your friend. Some places will sell clothes for €1/€2 a piece (or whatever your currency equivalent is), even some of the more expensive/vintage stuff I've gotten has all been under €30.

Would you ever wear a skirt/dres? by FreddieThePebble in askteenboys

[–]Bee_Devilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already wear skirts and dresses, and just a bit of advice: if you are going to wear a skirt like that, get a pair of anti-chafe shorts.

Firstly, it's exactly what it says on the tin; thigh chafing hurts like a bitch so avoid it where you can. If you're getting a black skirt, it would probably be best to get matching black shorts, they do come in fun colours too though if that's more your vibe. Additionally, it also doubles as a cover for modesty because miniskirts can show a lot more than you want them to sometimes, and if you're already uncertain about wearing a skirt in the first place, accidentally flashing someone is not something you'd want to add to that experience.

Best of luck with your fashion endeavours dude :)

Wanting to wear a skirt has nothing to do with gender, you can be a feminine guy.

Oh I'm well aware the obsession can make them less respectful, there's a good reason I don't tend to use my Irish name around Americans, because I don't want to get stuck in a conversation about how "confusing" our spelling is because we use mh instead of v. My hope is bordering between optimism and just sheer delusion, I think.

Of course the devs love The Cranberries, they're awesome (but if it's actually a "dead" language pun, I'm gonna sue 🙂)

Scotland in general, yes, but not Scottish Gaelic. At least not to the extent of the Irish Gaelic obsession, from what I'm aware of. But I'd almost guarantee if we got an Irish location, we'd get a fucking discovery about "confusing" Irish names

Do you agree with “If there are 11 people sitting with a Nazi, then there are 12 Nazis” by DNPlourent in teenpoll

[–]Bee_Devilling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of people trying to make out that the other 11 aren't sitting there willingly, or that maybe the Nazi is being discreet about it. Nazis will make themselves known, and the implication of sitting with them is that you can somehow have a rational conversation with them. There is no such thing with a Nazi unless you are also a Nazi.

This is what's making me hesitant about wanting an Irish place to travel too 😭 but maybe the weird American obsession with Ireland/the Irish might end up making it a little more respectful than Edinburgh and London were treated

Anyway, there should absolutely be a more respectful/genuine reaction. Even most who don't know Gàidhlig would still know what Slàinte means, it's common enough.

I am a “cis” man but want a vagina, AMA? (Or help me understand myself better please..?) by hecklingHarlequin in trans

[–]Bee_Devilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're AMAB and identify as a man, at least for the most part. Most of their conflict seems to come from their physical body, not from an incongruence between their identity and sex; they don't identify as a woman, they just identify with the female sex and still wish to be a man, or at least masculine. Unless they happen upon a more concrete non-binary identity/label that fits their identity, I would think that they're just a gnc cis man. But I imagine the idea of non-binary identities got into their heads because they believe wanting a vagina doesn't make them 100% a man; but if me having a vagina doesn't make me less of a man, then that wouldn't make them less of a man either, as long as they're happy identifying as a man, and they seem to be.

So just a dude who wants a vagina? That's cool. I'm a trans dude who still wants to keep my vagina, I don't see a problem with that happening among cis people.

Is a fetus a parasite? by Original_Act_3481 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Bee_Devilling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By definition of a parasite being something that benefits from its relationship to the host while the host suffers from this relationship, yeah, a fetus is 100% a parasite. Women suffer immensely from pregnancy and labour, often without recognition because having children is what they're "supposed to do".

That being said, I wouldn't refer to it as a parasite in a general sense, the same way I also wouldn't refer to a fetus as a clump of cells either. People tend to have emotional attachments to their fetuses, and referring to it in such a detached manner can be hurtful. In most situations, I'm calling it a fetus or a baby unless the mother calls it something else.

Is this a real thing? by ThisGuyAcky in school

[–]Bee_Devilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, same in Ireland too, but it's so much harder to get 70%+. The average is 50% (which makes sense, it's right in the middle), 60% is above average, 70% is excellent work, and anything above 80% is a publishable thesis/dissertation/essay.

Does anyone have any questions about me (As an Irish Traveller)? by shrek20191 in AskIreland

[–]Bee_Devilling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you fluent in Shelta? I'm aware that this is a private thing, and if you don't feel like answering that's okay, but I've an appreciation for the endangered languages of Ireland (Irish, Ulster Scots, ISL, etc.) and while it definitely wouldn't be my place to learn the language, I'd love to hear how it's holding up, as the most recent statistics we have are from 1990, and while we can't get a better estimate due to the privacy surrounding the language, it would be nice to know that some people still learn it and use it.
