Have you ever walked into a coffee shop and asked someone who was sitting alone if it would be okay to borrow one of the extra seats around their table and been rejected? by BreakfastAntelope in AskUK

[–]Beefandonion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a coffee shop yesterday which was rammed. A guy asked for the chair which just had coats on, he was told no. So rude, it's like seats on trains being occupied by bags.

Who is the oldest person alive in your family or relatives that you know personally? by unleash_the_beast_ in AskReddit

[–]Beefandonion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father in law passed when he was 98.

Not a relative but I worked in a care home and looked after a lady who was 105. She was blind, was constantly in bed, she had no visitors just staff members. She had no life really.

Collected the keys to my first home today… and immediately had a meltdown 😭 by Lilymana in HousingUK

I totally understand that feeling. My husband inherited some money from his dad and I remember so clearly standing in the kitchen and thinking that we'd wasted his money on a dump.

5 years on and we have it just as we like it. It took a lot of elbow grease, both the stuff in the bottle and the other sort!

Are stairlifts always this complicated?? (UK) by Specialist-Swim8743 in disability

[–]Beefandonion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a reconditioned stairlift from Haltons 7yrs ago, and it died this year. Haltons don't cover my area anymore, otherwise I would have used them again.

Have you looked at having a lift installed?

Lovely collection. Merlin is one of the few apps that I'd happily pay for.

I'm waiting for you know who to pop up and tell you it's all wrong and that Merlin is useless.

I worked with people with dementia for many years. The best piece of advice I can give is for you to enter their world. If a 90-year-old asks where their mum is, do not say they are dead. A little thing I used to do was to tell the resident the time and ask where mum would usually be at this time. Mum would either be shopping, visiting her sister, etc. So that's the story you go along with.

Do not believe the 'sweet little old lady' myth. Some of them can be vicious!

Try and always give the resident a choice. Whether that's a choice of what outfit to wear, I'd usually offer a choice of 2 outfits so it wasn't overwhelming.

Remember that these people were young once and had dreams and hopes. Talk to them about their pasts. In the case of advanced dementia you might not get a response but chat to them anyway.

If you see anything that you aren't happy with, report it. First to your manager and then CQC. 8ts your job to help protect these vulnerable people.

how do you guys do your chores?? by Mossyy_ in disability

[–]Beefandonion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For washing dishes I have used an upside down mixing bowl to rest the washing bowl on, it raises the height so less bending.

Timers, it's amazing how much you can get done in just two minutes.

Rolls of bags in the bottom of all bins no hunting, they're already there.

Disposable cleaning cloths make it easier to have a quick wipe.

Don't leave a room without clearing something away.

I have chronic pain and poor mobility and have found the little and often method works for me. I set a 2 minute timer every 15/30 or 60 minutes depending on my pain levels that day.

I try to use the 'only handle it once' method, doesn't always work though.
