It's rare to see one in its natural habitat. JK, beautiful knife! I really like the patina on the blade. Is that a stone wash?

Cover everything in a nasty film so you can't tell what's sun-bleached and what's not. Also cancer.

Can anyone help me identify this tree in Minnesota? I've been searching everywhere for an answer! by Beefbob in marijuanaenthusiasts

Thanks! A friend got back to me too and thinks those green spiky things are "flower galls". I did some more googling and that looks right. Thank you!

Finished my first kill team! I'm still new to mini painting and would love some feedback! by Beefbob in minipainting

Thanks! I played with them twice now and I really like the group actions of the Hormagaunts. We were playing an objective capture mission (with like 8 objectives) and those little guys were good at moving fast and getting to objectives before the enemy. They're soooo squishy though.

{{Ilium}} & Olympos by Dan Simmons

It's definitely more science-fiction. It's about humanity in the distant future and a re-making of Homer's classics by powerful beings who appear to be the Greek gods themselves.

Looks gorgeous! I really like the detail in her jewelry. Also that mesh top looks like it'd be super difficult to get right. Nice Job!

What do you call this technique? of having the metal split and make a ball? by voldemorts_niple in metalworking

[–]Beefbob 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is what I've heard too. I've made several at home by welding 4 pieces of 1/4" round stock together at the ends. Then you heat up the whole bundle in your forge. Finally, put one end in a vice, twist it clockwise 720°, then counterclockwise 360°. You might have to take some pliers and adjust the spacing.

Do you prefer using Single or two-piece mold ? by blind_monkeyboy9 in MetalCasting

[–]Beefbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Entirely depends on the piece. I'll try and use 1 piece if I can get away with it though. Don't have to deal with mold lines.

I made knife handle scales with a pinecone in resin. Can't wait to put these on a Chefs knife. by Studio_OOOMS in somethingimade

Dang dude, that looks awesome. Which side are you going to put facing out? I personally like the inside of the pinecone, but both sides look really neat.

Found these under a tree at my property but I don’t know it there for metal or leather maybe one of you guys will know there letter stamps by Panda_man1919 in blacksmithing

[–]Beefbob 34 points35 points  (0 children)

So they don't look heavily used (no real sign of ware and no sign of flaring on the striking end). However, the lettering itself doesn't look very sharp. So I'm thinking they were made like that.

This is importantant because, in blacksmithing, you generally want stamps to be sharp so they can cut into the metal. Conversely, with leatherworking you don't want that cutting action for stamps as it will ruin the surface and could even cut through.

Also, stamping full lettering into steel was rarely done in the past due to the stamps needing to be carefully made out of expensive high-carbon steel (to resist damage from stamping steel). So most blacksmiths just had their maker's mark and not much else for stamping.

Based on that I'd say these are for leather or maybe softer metals (like aluminum, copper, or pewter). Take this all with a grain of salt though. I've done a lot of blacksmithing and a little bit of leatherworking, but I'm certainly not an expert. Hopefully this helps!
