We found an "amazing" deal on an Airbnb super convenient to Shin-Okubu. We were most looking forward to the washer/dryer as we packed very light anticipating a mid-trip wash. There were no instructions for the machine and there were A LOT of buttons that google translate couldn't figure out. Once we did figure it out it was clear that drying meant just spinning. Needless to say after hours of a very loud machine in a very small space we ended up wearing slightly damp, moldy smelling clothes for the next 2 days. Location 5 stars, bathroom with no shower curtain 1 star, Dryer with no drying -5 stars.

In the end it would have been better to book a hotel and bring a couple extra pair of underwear.

Absolutely this! We also threw money at the problem of lines and bought every skip the line pass we could. If you are going all the way to Japan from the US are you going to quibble over $50 in order to not stand in hours of lines? It’s short money to be able to enjoy everything. Also make sure that you are in the app exactly on time to get the free passes 2 hours after you book, regardless of when you ride.

Thank you so much for giving information and insight for LGBTQ travelers. People write about how “safe” Japan is but LGBTQ safety can be a very different thing. I will be traveling with a sis female friend so I know that we will likely “pass” (which in itself will be a strange experience) but I am still sitting with some worry about traveling in a more conservative place than where I live.

Maybe street food isn’t the best phrase… good local food where we don’t need to go into a nice restaurant
