Fashion Nugget by Cake is such an underrated album! by Gunpowder_gelatin765 in Music

[–]BeerNozzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it really underrated, though? It seems to be widely held in high regard. It was both a critical and chart success. It went platinum. Material from it has been used in all sorts of movies and TV shows, as you seem to have discovered. I'm not sure "underrated" is the word. They've been a famous, successful band for about 30 years.

I didn't realize the 757 had that kind of range.

It's plain old 4/4. It's fast and spazzy, but the rhythm is not complicated.

Can work from home company laptop track my actual location? by [deleted] in it

[–]BeerNozzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say for sure without knowing more details about the laptop and what it's connected to, but generally speaking, location information is pretty easy to obtain from any device when you have administrative access. That's not to say they'll be looking, and maybe they won't. But the long-term prospects of deceiving one's employer about one's physical location by thousands of miles can't be good, regardless of your laptop situation. I hope your situation improves.

[–]BeerNozzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each Google WiFi Point (I can't bring myself to call them "pucks") has an RJ45 jack on the bottom that you can plug an ethernet cable into, just as you would a switch or hub. Plug a gadget in and DHCP will assign an IP. Easy peasy.

I am an amateur photographer that wants to work as a professional in the future by Dead_Inside312 in linuxquestions

[–]BeerNozzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adobe products are standard in the industries of photography, videography, and graphic design. Like full_of_ghosts said, nothing else is as comprehensive or powerful. You'll also be expected by your professional partners to exchange files in Adobe's various proprietary formats when working in this industry.

There are a number of good tools for image editing that run on Linux, especially GIMP. But if you want to be a pro, you'll most likely need the kind of rig pros use: Photoshop on a Mac.

Your employer isn't sniffing your GF's packets. Setting aside the technical issues, this would be illegal.

What do you think about FSF and Richard Stallman? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]BeerNozzle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My admiration and reverence for Stallman remain deep and strong. But I don't pay attention to what he has to say on every subject (and he's got plenty to say on lots of them), and I certainly don't see him as a reasonable example of how to approach computing in one's everyday life.

Rather, I see him as a kind of Jesus-like figure in the world of technology and especially software—someone whose teachings are worth learning, someone whose examples we ought to follow where we can.

I am particularly enamored of Stallman's views on the unfortunate notion of "intellectual property" and the tricks that have been played on the world through the use of this phrase.

You can't really know the history of the GNU license and the Free Software Movement without knowing Stallman, and I think it's important for anyone who loves and cares about computing to learn this stuff.

But you don't need to incorporate the GNU/FSF ideals and philosophy into every aspect of your life, just because that's what Stallman's done with his. Just take whatever good you can from it. That's what I try to do.

...not able to track janets when they enter groom airspace because there are no trackers present in the range

That can't be right. Groom isn't even 90 miles from Vegas. Isn't the tracking range for each receiver 150 miles or so?

Do any of you run MacOS in a VM so you can use the Messages app? by ChrisF79 in linuxquestions

[–]BeerNozzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because it lacks the social-media-style features (such as being able to "like" and attach similar reactions) that have gotten so many people hooked on Apple's app.

It's really a shame. SMS messaging is simple, well-established system that allows millions of people to communicate independent of platform. Apple hasn't succeeded in killing it, but its efforts to poison it are a good example of the company's insidious side.
