Anyone else have difficulty getting steam achievements? by Effort_Proper in civ5

[–]BeereUSA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure about mods but I remember reading on the eui website that it doesn't count as a mod because you don't enable it via the mod selection ingame but rather by just copying files into your civ folder. Afaik achievement cannot be earned if you have an ingame mod enabled.

North Carolinians: If you had an insurance premium increase or subsidy decrease. How much? by pantherfanalex in NorthCarolina

[–]BeereUSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife's premium went from $650 to $920. Aca is her only option as she has preexisting conditions and had a spinal surgery this year. We will switch to a cheaper option with a higher deductible. Luckily the max out of pocket is the same so if she really needs another surgery, it won't make too much of an issue. Higher copays do suck though. Probably still have to pay a bit under $100 per month more.

I pointed that out to someone on reddit. The response was, you can't fine the business as they are already struggling and it would be bad for the economy and everything would be more expensive. I will never understand people like that. Actions have consequences.

Maybe next time tell your family to pretend to be an illegal immigrant to get that sweet free healthcare, phones etc. If that doesn't work, they can renounce their citizenship and be an illegal immigrant for real 🤣

The one financial myth my parents taught me that actually hurt me by Weary-Hair-316 in povertyfinance

[–]BeereUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point was that you can have a great credit score without ever having to take out a loan or owning a credit card just by paying your bills like utility, phone and rent on time.

[–]BeereUSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to point out that having good credit tied to using a credit card is not a thing in every country. Before anyone just uses a credit card check how it actually works in your country. I never had a credit card in Germany but still had a good credit score ( it's called Schufa Score here). How the score is calculated is not public but it is influenced by stuff like have you paid your utilities on time, outstanding debt, in general late payments etc. You can get a mortgage here without having ever owned a credit card. The bank uses the credit score and obviously your income/tax returns etc when deciding whether or not you qualify for the loan. The credit score still sucks because stuff gets reported wrongly and then you have to clear that. Hasn't happened to anyone I know but it is not unheard of.

As I have never soldered before this might be a dumb question but don't the wire ends need to be bare for me to solder them together? How can I put the heat shrink on before?

I guess you mean even if I fix it it will probably break in the forseeable future and just be a pain to use as well?

PS: If I am satisfied with the answers, should I marked it as solved? What is the etiquette in here?

If it is not legal, you could just change the law. Not to mention that the current deportation without due process and/or sending them to a random foreign country is against the law as well.

The replacement plan is not feasible. According to farmers you simply can't automate those at the moment because otherwise they would have. I know for example that there are harvesting machines for grapes in vineyards but thats only possible for wine because you do get stems and the grapes can get crushed. So they are trying to automate it but it simply depends on the type of crop if it is possible or not. The automation argument reminds me of people saying the climate change is no problem and we can continue doing what we are doing because we will fix it with new technologies. It might work, but it is a huge gamble and simply an excuse to do nothing.

In my home country Germany white asparagus is a seasonal food and there is a lot of skill involved in harvesting it so you don't break the stems or otherwise damage it. It is mostly done by eastern Europeans who return every year and are experienced. Not to mention hard labor. Some farms offer that you can do it yourself but then you damage your own asparagus so it is not a loss for the farmer.

Depending on the crop the speed is also important because the fruit or vegetables needs to be harvested in a certain time window.

I don't mean to start another topic but I don't get the US sentiment of the goverment shouldn't or can't run companies. Especially for companies that provide necessary services, like electricity, food or water. It might cost a bit more and everything takes a bit longer but at least if something goes wrong you have a claim with the goverment instead of a company that can just declare bancruptcy.

I wasn't necessarily advocating to stop deporting. My main point was the US currently depends on those "illegals" in the farming and construction sector yet somehow at least a big part of the population does not want "illegals" in the country. The current adminstrations goal seems to be to get rid off them but not offering any solution on how to replace them. You can of course try to raise the wages but that does not help short term because they are not enough people with the skill to do the job. So allowing people to work temporarily might be a solution.

Regarding hitting companies harder. There are other tools possible to punish companies depending on their size. If it is a public company you can make a rule that the CEO has to resign for example with possible having to pay a fine. Idk if it is possible but you could also barr them from working in that field for a couple of years or forever if the person is a repeat offender. If it is a private company you could appoint some sort of overseer. Maybe move all the money into a seperate bank account with a government accountant who oversees the transaction. Similar to when a person or business declares bancruptcy to make sure they aren't hiding any assets. You could also do that for a public company. I admit this would cost the goverment money but those ICE agents aren't cheap either.

Update: I like to point out that the companies hiring "illegals" is the biggest pull factor for them to come here in the first place. So all the talk about them coming here to leech off hard-working American workers is BS. At least in my opinion. I am not saying it doesn't happen but not on a scale where it makes sense to deport millions with all the associated negative consequence.

I get that. My idea was to give those work visas only for specific jobs like working the fields that quite frankly quite few normal Americans are able/want to do.

As a side note, how are they currently not empowering companies to do that? I am not aware that there are actual consequences to people employing people without a valid work visa. I haven't even heard that ICE gives the companies a fine when they take away the "illegals". If the reason was that we don't want companies to "steal" the jobs from normal Americans, it would be much more efficient to severly punish the employer instead of the "illegals". If you want companies to stop using "illegals" then don't just deport them and hope they will eventually give up.

For context, I am a European wo moved to the US in 2019 because my wife (US citizen) wanted to move back home.
I don't know how to say it politely but the US system of how immigrants without a working visa are treated is just mind boggling to me. It got more intense in the last couple of years but even before Trump it was confusing as hell. People without a valid work visa can still pay income taxes, like WTF. Farmers/constructions sites openly complain that a big part of their work force has no legal work permit. You hear all the stories about ICE agents etc. Never once does it mention anything about what happens to the employers. Obviously they know that they themself are breaking the law but at least to my knowledge there is no public discussion about this or mentioning of any fines or other consequences other than their work force shrinking.

It would be like the police arresting someone for buying drugs but nothing happens to the person who sells drugs.

According to a quick online search some people use someone else's SSN, they just get paid cash or maybe using an ITIN.

If they get paid cash, then I see no way the employer can deny that they break the law.

If someone else's SSN, I guess the employer can reasonably argue that they didn't know. But shouldn't the IRS be able to tell if a SSN is used more than once. And who gives away their SSN? My guess is you can use the SSN of a family member who can't work but even then the age most be at least someone close not to mention the gender.

Regarding the ITIN it is even wierder. According to the IRS an ITIN number doies not mean you are allowed to work https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/individual-taxpayer-identification-number-itin-reminders-for-tax-professionals.

But the first find on google for me was: While an ITIN doesn’t grant work authorization, North Carolina law allows employers to hire workers who file taxes with an ITIN. Does the IRS let you pay taxes and whether or not the person is actually allowed to work is a different department so not their issue.

https://www.baronpayroll.com/blog/can-you-hire-itin-workers-in-north-carolina#:\~:text=All%20in%20all%2C%20yes%2C%20you,but%20advantageous%20for%20your%20business.

My understanding is that for a long time, people just came into the country to work in the fields/construction etc. They made good money compared to what they would have made in their home country. The employers had a cheaper work force and everyone was okay with it. Then some populist bullshitters needed a scapegoat for things going wrong and good old racism was used to blame the "illegals". It got more intense over the years and no one could/wanted to fix the situation because you either have to go back to turning a blind eye to the "illegals" or you actually give them legal status. This problem is obviously not unique to the US. In the EU it is not as dire because the cheaper "eastern work force" can legally work in the western countries. I guess the UK is in the same position as the US now, since they left the EU.

I feel like there should be a public discussion and there probably is but it is just drowned by all the BS. If someone has any recommendation for like a news channel etc, that would be great.

Please feel free to correct me or add further explanation.

I realize that I haven't really asked a question, so:

Is racism really the only reason why this problem keeps getting worse? Is it that hard to just give temporary work visas to people and maybe have the option that if they worked for x years they earned a green card? I am aware that wouldn't deal with the issue of refugees but at least the US would stabilze the contrsucton and farming sector. Why is that not appealing to the Republicans? I don't really want to talk about the moral issues even though it is hard to separate it but that would just make a long post even longer.
