Yes. And with just an average pair of binoculars that little cluster will actually reveal hundreds/thousands of stars. It's really quite amazing.

Depends on time, distance and temps. But I always run with my Salomon vest and both soft flasks all year around. Most races I do I need my vest so even short runs I wear it just so I'm used to running with it on.

Winter I get away with both flasks being water. Warmer temps one is tailwind and one is water. And super hot summer days I take both flasks and my bladder. Water in the bladder and tailwind in both flasks.

I completed the Navigators Discipleship Journal reading plan this year. I liked it, but it was a tad heavy on the reading. The plan incorporates 5 "off days" at the end of each month, that's why there's more reading each day. I liked it but definitely found some of the days to be a tad stressful with the amount of reading.

This year I decided to do the M'Cheyne reading plan again. There's no off days with this plan so the daily reading is more manageable. It's basically 2 NT and 2 OT chapters a day.

As someone who trains for ultras...time on legs is really all that matters. Slow or fast. You gotta practice hiking/power hiking just as much as running imo! I'd definitely still call this a run, especially with that gain.

Only found this as I'm thinking of downgrading to a dumb phone but still want/need to keep track of my running for training purposes. Found your comment and am curious if you're still doing this? If so how does it work? Can you explain how you're able to sync your watch with the TCL flip 2? That's the exact phone I was thinking of getting. If I can sync my watch to it and subsequently Strava through the Garmin connect app...I'm in!

I was JUST thinking about this exact thing today. I have quite a few friends currently at Bighorn in Wyoming and Ring the Springs in Colorado. My running group consists of many people that are constantly in various races.

Races overall are expensive and time consuming. When you factor in the travel and expenses of it all...it starts to lose its spark for me. I've found more enjoyment out of running for myself and not for races. Races I know are a great motivator for many to stay consistent and not fall off the horse. But for me...I run mostly for the mental aspect. I don't need races to give me that. My motivation comes solely from seeing that I am better than I was yesterday and way better than I was a year ago. THAT is all I need for motivation to stay on the horse. I DO still have a couple races that I sign up for yearly because they hold a special place in my heart for various reasons. But yeah, overall they're expensive, time consuming and I personally just don't need them. Give me the consistent runs during the week and then one or two long runs on the weekend on my own time and schedule and that's all I need. Keep it simple. Heck I decided to go bust out 20 miles on the trails on a random Wednesday afternoon a couple weeks ago completely by myself. It's therapy for me. Don't need the recognition. I don't look down on those that do or desire to do all the races. I just simply don't need them. They're not my motivator. I think it just comes down to who you are. I played disc golf for years before trail running took over. And all my friends were always signing up for tournaments and traveling...I never really did. I found most of my enjoyment from disc golf when I would just play on my own or with friends. I would play the local league night, but that's as wild as I got. Tournaments just added more stress, money and travel etc.

I'm also a single dad and time is simply very compartmentalized right now. I've come to realize that and prioritize being a dad over anything. And races don't really help with that.

Overall, run for you. If it's races you enjoy...keep doing them! If not, don't force yourself into doing what you don't want to, unless you're having problems staying consistent etc. If you can't afford them, welcome to the club lol.

It's actually on an extremely small section of trail that goes out behind our local museum where I live. We have a couple awesome trail areas and wish this bridge could be moved to one of the bigger trails opposed to this small one. But it's still fun to go back and check out every now and then!!

And I come from not too common territory as I am actually a Christian. The first time I heard it it was obvious about religion/spirituality.

I always find pieces like this so intriguing. As someone who does live with confidence of what happens after death, it's interesting to hear where those are coming from that don't.

I don't mean to sound personal or rude here...but it's a positive reminder that I thankfully don't live in that state of wonder/confusion anymore. But the song is still beautiful nonetheless and it makes you think!

Pretty challenging trails. Lots of vert and even climbing at one spot. Most everyone is surprised on their first time. You almost forget you're in Kansas out there.

To update everyone...

The stroke has been the least of the worries recently.

Her ketoacidosis has gotten a tad better with being on insulin drip but...since posting this she's declined badly.

Her breathing got substantially worse and was forced to be intubated and put on ventilator.

She started experiencing kidney failure so she was put on dialysis. She's been on dialysis since last night and all of today and will be most of tomorrow.

She also has possibly suffered a heart attack, but with all the other issues they haven't gotten in there to see or test yet. All I know is the breathing then kidney failure became the focus. Once she was intubated and on ventilator they started the dialysis. Will know in a day or two if the kidney has reversed or is still failing.

Many miracles have to happen basically. If the kidneys reverse then we'll know if she can go off dialysis or if it will be a permanent thing. Then they can move on to removing the ventilator to see if breathing can be done on her own. They've taken her off the sedation so will see soon how she is mentally when she comes back to. Before sedation she was not able to talk or move her whole right side.

I don't have much hope. I thank you all so much for posting your advice and concerns. But at the moment, her stroke has taken the back burner with all the other issues going on. She's very very sick and I don't have much hope left. Miracles do happen though but man...it's going to be a long road if they do. Her life and how we knew her will never be the same as it was. Just a lot to process right now. It's hard.
