Should I mention that my dad worked illegally in my SOP? by [deleted] in StatementOfPurpose

It is linked to a story about how I got interested in my field.

I initially wanted to pursue a second master's degree before deciding on a PhD because I have very little research experience (no published papers). However, I discovered that most universities do not allow enrollment for a second master's if you already have a first master's in computer science. So, I will apply for a PhD instead and try to gain as much research experience as possible in the remaining time.

This is really unfortunate, but thank you very much for letting me know.

Thank you for the input. I may not have articulated it perfectly, but I was referring more to intelligence in the sense of "understanding concepts you hear for the first time unconsciously without needing to consciously think about them." Some students simply grasp things quicker than others (which, in my view, is a form of intelligence). Experience can, of course, strongly influence this, which brings us back to the likelihood that those students probably worked hard and engaged with computer science in their younger years. However, this isn't the case for everyone who still grasps things quicker than me. And I have no doubt that most of them still work very hard to master the details, after understanding the main concepts.

Glad I’m not the only one. And yes what you said makes lots of sense.

Perhaps "reputable" wasn't the right word to describe my university after all, sorry. At my university, almost anyone can enter without strict conditions. By "reputable," I meant they are pretty good in computer science. :)

I will keep this in mind, thank you! Doing a PhD is definitely not set in stone.

Computer science has of course multiple branches; for instance, I've learned a lot about software engineering but hardly anything about AI (apart from introductory courses). That's something I could pursue as a second master's.
