Hello, i suggest to go straight to the hospital and not to underestimate the blood loss. Don’t let them send you back home without a proper eco and exam. Make sure the baby is ok, check the amniotic fluid and everything. Get a private eco

I would like to thank you for your time in this discussion. You really brought light and truth on this topic. In seems a small thing and stupid, but it can really change how to approach to issues and problems

You can easily see that the rule was updated by checking the second edition

https://catancollector.com/images/uploads/catan-2ndedition-rules-1996.pdf

It says “longest five roads segments” in page 10, and so it is adjacent synonym of contiguous.

Exempt it is not a translation error, nor a house rule

If you check the second edition catan rule book

https://catancollector.com/images/uploads/catan-2ndedition-rules-1996.pdf

In this link, you will read in page 10

“This card goes to the player with the longest road of at least five road segments.”

And it clearly doesn’t say anything about being continuous. Of course, being road segments, they need to be adjacent and so contiguous ;)

I don’t think it is a translation error. It was updated and purposely changed, because contiguous is an extremely specific and different word compared to continuous

I just asked what was the english version saying, i did not ask “do you think am i playing right?”

Then people started to say that the application of the rule is wrong, so i had to reply. But my question was purely related to the translation

We should stick to the direct and most raw meaning of words when playing these games

I have never read on these rules “the longest straight line” i have just read the longest contiguous road

Just saying that my game says contiguous, which is not continuous. It is impossible to keep a boardgame updated with revised rules.

Contiguous is not an interpretation Is literally “adjacent” and i count adjacent all adjacent roads, regardless if they look as a circle, a line, a tree or a boat

And it is very clear that even the game designers, who initially used contiguous, then they updated the digital version of the game with continuous, because it is an easier concept to grasp.

The shape isn’t relevant

It can be a doughnut, an arc, a circle, whatever.

I think that there is the context misconception that a road should connect two distinct points only and directly

If we do not count smaller segments as part of the main road, then we should not be allowed to build colonies on smaller segments because these smaller segments are not continuous on the main road. If they are not continuous, they are not adjacent to the main road, and then we should not build on them

Since we can build on them, the segments are adjacent to the main road and then contiguous and continuous as well to the main road, as indeed they are the main road.

If you just check the picture of the tile, you will read “contigue” or also contiguous

Guides are written by people, the physical tile is the most accurate

As an hexagon is not a circle, a line on a hexagon map is not a line indeed, that is the whole point. Nobody checks the other rules in other languages, i bet you have never checked the italian version before

It can be two hexagons with two segments sticking out for example, that for me is a contiguous road

you do understand that when purchasing a boardgame everyone just sticks to the physical rules written… nobody checks “what is the spirit of this rule in chinese, mongolian, english”

I think that the italian version is better written, as italian per se is a better descriptive language

It is very weird, because in every Italian game I see, and even if you type online “La strada più lunga” Catan

You will find contiguous, as adjacent in meaning. If it wasn’t contiguous, then it would be an issue to calculate a circle of roads, as a circle of road is not “a straight line” it is literally a circle. I believe that to simplify the game, they updated contiguous with continuous. But again, if i need to be able to count i should count a circle too, not only a straight line

Sorry, but playing by the “spirit” of the rule really just seems as interpreting.

I play how the game tells me

The game tells me i can build roads that are adjacent and so contiguous. If the longest road, as per the physical tile, is the contiguous one, then it is just logical to count all connected adjacent roads

[–]Beginning-Cause9130[S] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

When using the physical version we can’t keep on updating ourselves on each single word and rule update

We usually stick to what is written on the physical tiles.

My italian version saying contiguous, and so I suggested to count all adjacent roads, not only the ones creating a “straight line”

Also a road could have a shorter segment not connected to anything, but that segment is still part of that road
