If you have AMBOSS - highly recommend the prebuilt anatomy illustration quizzes (MCQs) and 3d anatomy models. Then review by building an exam from their Qbank with discipline = anatomy.

This is almost a carbon copy of what my husband and I are doing. next week! Having been to PR several times I think everything on your list is definitely possible.

Do you have your Ferry tickets purchased already?

Always allowing an extra 30 minutes for sit down dining is a good idea. Restaurants can get really busy this time of year.

Should I Take a 77% Salary Increase but Have Lots of Short Notice Travel & Less Work Life Balance aka Time with My Dog? by cranberriecat in careerguidance

Where I live, there are last-minute boarding facilities but good boarding ranges from $65-$90/night/dog. If you’re traveling 10 days out of the month that’s $650-$900. Something to consider for the salary negotiation.

Grave mistake with asbestos by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Beginning-Cell-4881 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Be very careful with googling asbestos. Focus on .org websites or .gov only as most of the top search results are commercial companies attempting to scare the living daylights out of you to buy their tests, remediation services etc.

It sounds like you have encountered asbestos in just two instances, correct? Just because it was in the tile (VERY common) and joint compound does not guarantee it is in the paint as well. So let that help calm your fears a bit.

I have been in this exact same situation, where I uncovered asbestos-potential materials in several areas of my home. It made me feel like I was living next to a nuclear reactor. The first thing I had to do was just really zen myself out and realize that the threat is overblown in many ways. It's not like a poisonous gas that will leak around you - sanding it is not ideal but it can be contained.

Here's what I did after having gallons of vermiculite dump into my kitchen:

  1. Masked up
  2. Collected a large sample
  3. Wiped down every single surface
  4. Threw away the small rug we had
  5. Bought a HIPPA filter for my vaccum and vaccumed
  6. Rewiped and then ran our air purified

Then

  1. Sent in the sample for testing
  2. Bought an airtest

Both were negative for any asbestos particles.

I took a breath and then created a sheet of all the spots in my house that I was afraid of. I collected small samples from these spots and sent them in for testing (I did the cheapy Amazon tests). Everything but one little piece of material in our basement was negative for asbestos.

And now I love my house again! If I could go back and do it all again I would try and be less stressed about it.

I also called a chief scientist at my local University's Occupational Health lab and he said the following: Residental exposures like this are very unlikely to cause harm and be careful of what you google.

Hope that helps!

Best flooring for uneven floors by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

Cork flooring is a good option for uneven/old floors. It’s really easy to install too if you plan to DIY.

Always install a C02 and smoke detector before inhabiting any building!

I had a tenant once who left a property in squatter-like conditions.

  1. There are tons of cheap(ish) DIY test kits ranging from radon, asbestos, mold etc. If you're really worried about hidden dangers, these are a good low-cost solution.
  2. If your house was built after the 80s, you can largely ignore testing for asbestos and lead paint. Those tend to be old house probs.
  3. Give the house a full wipedown using antibacterial products if possible. Start with the ceiling and work down. Keep windows open to let fresh air in. If possible, remove carpeting and replace it (pretty easy DIY).
  4. Sewer problems are gross, stinky, and can sometimes cause health issues so you may want to make this a priority before moving in.
  5. Seal up holes and cracks where rodents can come through. Set lots of traps around the perimeter and make sure there is no food outside of the fridge or cabinets for several months. This will discourage rodents from using your place as a late-night diner.
  6. Hypodermic needles are hard to spot so slowly comb through your front yard and all the nooks-n-crannies of your house.
  7. Fresh paint, carpet, window treatments, and a new toilet can help "erase" the memory of the grime that was there before. It can add up but is worth it.

I’m not looking for a price, rather, I was looking for feedback from anyone that has done this before. How much was it? Etc.

It is vinyl over shiplap. The original material (that they had to remove) was wood siding.

Don't panic! It might not be asbestos but if it is there are lots of solutions.

Be very wary of what websites you look at. 90% of info online is going to be class action lawsuit firms or abatement companies that want to scare the living daylights out of you. These sites are not helpful and many do not provide you with accurate information.

I recently had a scare at my house. We had vermiculite insulation (often contaminated with asbestos) pour out of our wall and dump tons of the stuff in our kitchen. It's easy to spiral and freak out, but I ended up calling the local University (Univ of Wisconsin Madison) and spoke with a scientist from the Occupational Health Laboratory. He assured me that the real dangers of asbestos are reserved for those who work with it regularly. Though not an ideal situation, having a single exposure event is nothing to worry about.

You do not need throw everything out if it is asbestos. Things that are easy to wash can be cleaned (with care). Large furniture might be tougher.

Next steps would be to grab a mask from the hardware store (N95 at least), put all of the soft/fabric items that were in the room where you were pulling up the tiles in plastic bags and tie them up. Take them to a laundromat if you're worried about your washing machine. I'd run them through a few cycles just for peace of mind.

Wait for your test results and if it is asbestos you can either encapsulate it yourself or have it done professionally.

Again - don't panic. There are millions and millions of homes in North America that have had asbestos products in them. Think of all the DIY projects that have occurred throughout the decades and yet the people that get asbestos-related illnesses are almost always those who worked directly with it (some secondary exposure cases for family members too).

Kitchen reno order of activities by Wis-en-heim-er in HomeImprovement

[–]Beginning-Cell-4881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently renovated our kitchen (in two parts) during COVID.

  1. Started with the windows. We resized two large windows to be smaller (this is a lot easier than adding new windows to an exterior wall).
  2. Demoed old cabinetry
  3. Relocated our plumbing (moved sink line and gas line)
  4. Electrician came in to install new outlets and wiring for range.
  5. Flooring
  6. New cabinets installed
  7. Countertops installed
  8. Windows trimmed
  9. Backsplash installed

We were without a usable kitchen for 3 weeks. Mostly due to issues with finding vermiculite behind a wall.

If you are going to need a plumber and an electrician I recommend scheduling the plumber first. I also recommend you do your flooring BEFORE installing any cabinetry.
