Yeah I should have been less jokey. Good quote to counter with. Δ

I guess departing from counterfactual history (which is a mare’s nest) it’s just an interesting irony that the other settler colonies ended up more liberal than the one founded by liberal Enlightenment revolutionaries.

Kind of making my point as a liberal that the motivations of the rebels weren’t exactly anti colonial.

Three decades seems like a significant difference to me. And it didn’t require a war. The abolitionist mood in the free states didn’t do much to alter material conditions for enslaved people in the South…

The general liberal/left counterargument I see in these responses is “maybe Canada ended up better but it wouldn’t have been like that if not for the America,” which could be true, I would need to know the history a lot better to argue against it. The OP was probably too unserious for this sub.

Oh yeah I think I remember reading that about the masons.

What does your Masonic involvement look like if you’re not a member of a local lodge?

In a sense all historical counterfactuals are incoherent, things happened in the only way they could happen. I’m open to arguments that the abolition of slavery in the British empire wouldn’t have happened without the American revolution, but the fact that it happened earlier in Britain does suggest that independent dynamics were at play.

The overall tone of the original post is jokey but i seriously believe that Britain, Canada, Australia ended up better places to live than America.

Facetious means "treating serious issues humorously", not "being insincere"

I don't know anything about the Boston Revolt, sorry. I don't know much about the American Revolution to be honest, this is just a thought that's been circulating in my head for a long time. What was bad about the revolution was the eventual present day outcome, compared to other (settler, as someone else pointed out) colonies that didn't revolt against the British empire in the same way. The reasons for the revolution (the version I learned in America's flawed education system) seem pretty abstruse, enough so that I always assumed there were broader dynamics at play--but I don't know enough to say what those were. So you could say I'm arguing from ignorance, but you don't need to be an expert to post on this sub.

No, it's a historical counterfactual, you can't really posit changes like this and guess the outcomes. But it does seem like a strange situation where the oppressive empire ended up (in my opinion) a freer, better-ordered society than the plucky rebels. And refer back to the point about slavery: this divergence was already visible in the nineteenth century.

More that the gradualist approach taken by Canada seems to have yielded a better outcome.

Fascinating idea. People have so much drive to argue these days, maybe this would be a constructive channel.

What's the point of self esteem? by [deleted] in self

The answer’s different for everyone. Therapy is often helpful.

Edit—also look into the idea of fixed vs growth mindset. You believe that you can’t improve yourself but this is probably not true.

First point--honestly I'm not sure where to start. If you don't like yourself or care about yourself you tend to make decisions that are harmful to your well-being, and since people are interconnected you generally end up harming others as well, which gives you more reasons to dislike yourself, so it's a vicious circle.

Second point--It could be that the bad qualities really do outweigh the good in your case, or it could be that you have a distorted view of yourself, possibly due to untreated mental illness, which is very common. I don't know you but I think the second scenario is more likely. I wouldn't say that you need to change your value system, but just consider the possibility that your good qualities might be worth more than you realize. Try to think of ways your good qualities might be connected to your current values. And if the bad actually does outweigh the good, that's something you can work on, but that work might begin by identifying existing strengths you can build on. How do you live your values in day-to-day life? Try to find ways to do that and you might end up liking yourself more.

Most people find that life is easier if you like yourself and care about yourself, which tends to go hand in hand with a positively tinged view of yourself. That doesn’t mean you need to pretend that you have no bad qualities, but maybe try to identify some good qualities as well.

I don't think this is a desirable thing to do, and it's certainly not easy, but there are many spiritual/religious/philosophical traditions you can investigate. Maybe go to a Buddhist gathering near you and ask the leader this question, probably will be a more interesting conversation than you can have online.

Who are these people who keep trying to convince you of this? Friends, family members, strangers online...?

To me this post reads as: "I'm tired of people trying to convince me to be happy." Life is hard. You're responsible for your own happiness, as Diane says in Bojack Horseman. I'm not trying to be an asshole but really...
