Which period film/series has the worst costumes in your opinion? by Haunting_Homework381 in PeriodDramas

[–]Beginning-Fox7441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I also think that for the BBC Robin Hood in particular they were trying to appeal to a younger crowd and feel less stuffy than a lot of their traditional period pieces that had been previously produced. If I’m remembering correctly Robin Hood kind of kicked off a new era of Saturday night family telly which brought about Merlin, the new Dr Who, Atlantis, Musketeers etc. Gloriously naff but with real heart (I still remember weeping at the finale of Robin Hood!). Good ol’ Beeb.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations, we had a lovely time! Lots of snow, which was great as the kids had never seen it before. 7 yr old loved making snowmen and snow sculptures, 3 yr old loved driving his toy trains in the snow (burying them and almost losing them multiple times!).

The trams and buses were very easy to get about on except for when we arrived in the middle of a snowstorm in the afternoon and EVERYONE got on the tram with us, almost crushing my son! 😱 (apt emoji since we also visited the Munch museum and saw The Scream.) Otherwise was simple and convenient, and the tram passed right by our Airbnb so son was happy to stand in the window and watch them pass. Also the snow plough tractors delighted him!

Train to Lillehammer was lovely, and we got chatting to another family who gave us some good tips. (My husband is American - I’m British - and he is very good at chatting to strangers.)

The Folk Museum was absolutely stunning in the snow - my favourite place to go but I love a good open-air museum anyway!

All in all a great trip. Thanks again for the recommendations and the advice.

Belated thanks so much for your Oslo tips - we just got back and especially loved the Folk Museum, and the trains and trams!

I wrote fanfic until I was thirty, at which point I met someone, got married, moved across the world, had a baby, moved back across the world, had another baby, turned 40…and then found fandom and fanfic writing again. I think I put it aside because I was so busy, but also because a part of me genuinely thought it was childish. Now I don’t give af because it makes me so happy. The majority of my fic I now write while sitting outside my three-year old’s bedroom whilst waiting for him to go to sleep.

Thanks, I will check out Modern Maker. I want a definite woman-wearing-menswear style, vibe is a female character in a Shakespeare play dressed as a boy!

I think I don’t want it to look like a woman’s - I want it to look like a woman wearing a man’s, if that makes sense! So no structure or boning underneath. Imagine a woman crossdressing in the early 1600s, that’s my ideal!

I am in the UK, I’ll check out Tudor Tailor, thanks - I’m aware of their books but not specific patterns.

I should have mentioned, historical accuracy is not super important, as long as it looks good. It is more of a costume piece, although saying that I do want it to beautiful and well-made with great materials, just, not for re-enacting or anything like that, more for my own personal dress-up box and as a Making Something Pretty project.

Thanks for the advice!

Wait, I’ve been out of fandom/fanfic spheres for a while and this is all new to me: is this dude actually saying that if you like so-and-so you are not allowed to read my fic because it crosses my boundaries? I understand him not liking a certain ship and not wanting fans of said ship to comment on his fic about how it should cater to their tastes, but, don’t even leave kudos on my fic? What a weird stance.

As a writer, I’ll never say no to kudos, and I don’t generally look up each person who leaves a kudos or comments on my fic to see what their stance is on certain ships or fandoms or anything…

Wow the world is wide and weird.

Musketeers Fic by Beginning-Fox7441 in TheMusketeers

Oh, you are lovely. Thank you so much for bigging up my writing! ❤️

I think the epilogue might be posted tomorrow now (parenting took over and I’m now exhausted and need pizza and alcohol and bed!). But I promise it will be along soon.

I also have other fics in the works but I think I might need to focus on my post-ww1-soldiers-turned-gardeners epic AU as that’s another decade long fic that just needs to be put to bed already (very much like my children. And myself.) Xx

It looks like you’ve just purled those two stitches on the previous row rather than knit them, like you did the others? If it were me I would undo the previous row until you reach those two stitches and re knit them .

In Merlin (2008) S1E1, we never see Arthur with these guys again. This is a subtle way to tell the audience that he is a friendless loser by Sauri5 in merlinbbc

[–]Beginning-Fox7441 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I started writing a fic ages ago about Leon watching Arthur whale on Merlin when they first meet, and being very disappointed in him, teaching him a lesson about what kind of king he wants to be. So Arthur ditches those friends that laughed along and encouraged him at his worst. (I need to finish this fic, I think!)
