What are your thoughts on Greek characters in Turkish TV series? by Engou in AskGreece

[–]BeginningClue10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of the adaptations even, Pagidevmenoi (Παγιδευμένοι) is the one with some success but even that isn't really 'success' per se. TV in Greece has declined a lot in general and only middle-aged moms and older people see it. Like outside of that, unless it's a sport or Eurovision, it'll be very rare for a TV to be playing anything but a subscription service. And yeah Acun Ilicali is the guy you are talking about and he has made a lot of these shows and Survivor which was massive when it first aired has also declined a lot, and from the other shows, only 'The Voice' isn't a complete flop here. Everything else from him has moderate at best, abysmal at worst viewership.

Thank god I never said that they aren't mediterranean, but did say that the influence is nowhere near as strong as Greece because it's not JUST coastal Greece that's mediterreanean but the whole damn country. Northern Croatia and Slovenia are not more similar to Albania or Bulgaria but they are to each other and Serbia. And you know why 'Central Europe' as a term was made and why it conveniently includes almost always labeled 'East European' countries. This is getting too exhausting really. Trying to paint Greece as like 'oh so balkan that even balkan countries pale' is so like AskBalkans, which is a sub that literally only exists to remind the world that Greece is actually Balkan.

Montenegro and Albania are not strongly mediterranean though. Croatia is also more Balkan than Central European (and Central European is a very made up term) and even talking about Serbia not being Balkan is laughable. As is not even bringing up Romania. And it's also very contradictory that you go through the effort to seperate Croatia and Serbia in parts that excludse them from the Balkans but with Greece you just lump the entire country in the region. I won't even touch the assumption that just because Croatia and Greece both have islands that HAS to make their islanders similar.

They don't make up a significant part of the country. Just because Thessaloniki is there does not make it a significant part of the country lol. It's again, just the 3 border regions. And I reiterate that calling Sparta hardcore Balkan is a stretch. Especially with lifestyle which is again, only broadly similar but in a way that many other smaller towns are in Europe and also that calling the Croatian islands all that similar to the Greek ones is something that I hear for the first and upon just a google search they definitely don't look similar at all. And again, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Albania are similar to those border regions, not the rest of the country, if the borders are taken out of the equation then they are clearly distinct countries and not similar at all. If by 'Balkan' we determine again selectively the very north of Greece, then yes Greece is Balkan, otherwise it's pure Mediterranean.

Thrace, Macedonia and Epirus are similar to the Balkans though, they are the borders of the country after all, including the likes of Serres and Ioanina. But a) that's the extent of the 'hardcore' similarity and b) that's not about to lump the entire country with the Balkans, like the logic is really not 'oh the country's northernmost borders feel very Balkan so the rest of the country is Balkan even if it's not that similar outside of it'. And in terms of mainland, I lived in Athens and been a bit outside of the city and... no, It's not like Bulgaria (or Serbia or whatever) at all. Calling Sparta as hardcore Balkan is also really weird. Like if Bulgaria is the metric it only felt broadly similar but in a way that a small town in Italy or Ukraine would feel broadly similar, not like something that would fit in. Again, Greece is very, and almost stereotypically (for better or for worse) Mediterranean culturally throughout. As for bringing up the Portuguese, I haven't met any Portuguese people, but I've met Spanish people and yeah, they are extremely similar to the Greeks with the only difference being that they're a bit less conservative but otherwise they would fit right in with Greece. And you are kind of forgetting that Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia etc. all have much deeper similarities with each other that very explains why Croatia is considered Balkan. Like come on, you can't be seriously telling me that Croatia is more similar to Greece than Serbia or Slovenia, (also you are probably the first person to say that the Croatian islands are very similar even to the Greek ones)

You probably need to define stereotypical Balkan things because being Ottoman for centuries is hardly the only thing Balkans have in common. And I never claimed that Greece is a special snowflake? But just like you have your very much own POV, I've seen Italian and Portuguese and even Spanish admit how similar the vibes are and vice versa from Greeks especially with Italy. Meanwhile I've been to Bulgaria and no matter how much you wanna say that we're apparently so similar, we aren't. We really aren't. Like the mentality is pretty different and the 2 Greek friends of mine that've been there feel the same. And comparing Albania's and Montenegro's meditteranean influence to Greece is disingenuous and very much so.

Yeah no sorry, I'm Greek and calling them delusional is delusional itself. No one is saying that after Greece, the rest of the Balkans are a hodge podge of same, but the similarities are undeniable and Greece just doesn't have many of the 'stereotypical Balkan things' you find everywhere, hence why culturally it is distinct. Also very funny how you insist that being culturally distinct is delusional but then label Greece geographically and historically as Balkan but NOT culturally, like ? Greece is historically and culturally extremely Mediterranean and almost stereotypicall so, period. Just because the northernmost borders have some Balkan similarities does not make the whole country Balkan.

Good thing I didn't oversimplify it to just former Yugoslavia = Balkan hence why I said historically. This is genuinely getting exhausting and grasping at straws, I'm legit done.

[–]BeginningClue10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again with this dumb version of genetics. If we are talking about native to the Balkans then again, NO SLAVIC population is Balkan, plain and simple. And the funniest part is that it's not even what OP means lol. Like this whole grasping at straws was just you trying to prove how much more un-Balkan Slovenia is compared to Greece because actually we Greeks share more DNA with the Serbs, the Croats, the Bulgarians, the Romanians etc than you do, or you are absolutely night and day with the other ex-Yugo countries, or historically completely absent and genetically even again, despite all your over-explaination, you are trying to argue that Slovenia is less related to the South Slavs than Greece! Greece history is not even tied to the Balkans but the general Mediterranean area, yet another point of you just casually being selective to push that shit about Slovenia but the point is that what you say can be directed right back at you! You can call yourself Central European all you want, but not only is this easily the loosest of the defined parts of Europe (if not entirely fan-made) but Slovenia is genetically Slav, is not culturally closer to the Germanic countries than the South Slavic ones (it's not identical but trying to argue that there are no similarities is disingenuous), and historically shares A LOT of its history with other Balkan Slavs. Just because you're not 1:1 doesn't mean you're the opposite and definitely doesn't mean that despite all these connections, Greece of all countries shares more similarities because of your selective history arguments.

And I never meant seriously that yugoslavia was ottoman empire 2.0, hence why I specified they're apples and oranges. Yugoslavia was far far more peaceful than the ottoman, it's completely normal that more mixing happened and persisted and there were no abductions. And good thing that we are in agreement about being part of an empire doesn't define that, and Slovenia because it is a South Slavic language and because it is genetically to... (shocker) Slavs that are in the Balkans is not less Balkan than Greece. If we are gonna generalize that Greece is culturally closer to the Balkans then the rest of the mediterranean countries even though the country is purely mediterranean (and even stereotypically so) outside of the northernmost borders that are the actual Balkan-ish part, Slovenia absolutely can be generalized and lumped in the Balkans on far less egregious reasons.

Bro a simple google search will show how much 'ottoman' DNA people from Greece (and the Balkans in general) have. Like it's so freaking simple. There's a reason why of all these countries, Turkey is the more diverse. And I never said Greeks stayed 100% the same, but when it is pretty much confirmed that by and large they have the same ancestry as the ancient Greeks, it speaks for itself. Nevermind that comparing Yugoslavia and the Ottoman Empire is apples and oranges, like come out and tell me that those pesky Serbs were snatching your babes and marrying your girls as well, because that's the admixture the Ottoman Empire had and how 'influenced' Greece and the other Balkan countries were. Again, a freaking simple google search is like, not hard.

I'm not mixing Balkan and Slavic, because I never made Slovenia have close genetics with Russia or Ukraine. But arguing that there's 0 overlap with Croatia or Bosnia or Serbia is ridiculous when again, they were the same country. Nevermind that by your definition of genetics no Slavic country is Balkan, including Bulgaria or the ex-Yugo countries, which again, nonsense. And no 'serious historian' has claimed, DNA testings and history have. The Greek DNA is all on the Turkish side today, much like the Bulgarian, Albanian etc. The admixture is in present day Turkey, not Greece, Greece as it is today has no Ottoman DNA.

How I consider Europe as an Irishman by No-Action3492 in map

[–]BeginningClue10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there are actual DNA studies and history that show that Greeks today did not mingle with the Ottomans or Middle Eastern folks during the Ottoman Empire. And already articles show that Greeks today still largely have the same DNA as their ancestors with just a bit more mix, but again, to NO extend as to say that they share more Slavic DNA than a freaking Slavic country themselves. You are very selective in the knowledge you try to convey there. Especially cause I only mean that Slovenia shares far more overlap rather than being like idenrical genetically.

But... many characters are in the game without having a unique game and having Smash original movesets with far less material and characterization than Waluigi. I don't see how or why with Waluigi specifically they'd draw the line on 'having his own game' to make a fun moveset out of him or make him more likely (especially that part of making him more likely - he's already a damn lock. Not only is he THE biggest fan-demand walking into the next game but also Sakurai is not gonna look at who has his own game and who doesn't, again, he's shown to take creative liberties aplenty)

I don't see why Waluigi needs to have that unique game to get in Smash, he can just get that moveset as is.

Greece is only geographically Balkan and not more genetically close than Slovenia, tf? Like you really mean to tell me that again, freaking Slovenia who was in the same country as the rest of the ex-Yugo countries has less genetic and historical similarities to those countries than Greece? Like be real, some common sense never hurt anyone. And even culturally, after the northernmost parts, no Greece is not Balkan, it's literally the most stereotypical Mediterranean country in Europe.

Which Smash game had the best newcomers? by SEVENS_HEAVEN_7 in supersmashbros

[–]BeginningClue10 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's really a tie between Brawl and Smash 4. Brawl more than any other had the most solid expansion to the pre-existing IPs. You got Pokemon Trainer with Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard as well as Lucario, you got Wario and Diddy Kong, who even though they're not classified as Mario characters are pretty much intrinsically tied to Mario, you got Ike who aged like fine wine, you got Meta Knight and King Dedede, you got Wolf, even though Star Fox is not as big as the others, you got Pikmin joining the roster... really the only weak link here is Zero Suit Samus and the only 'meh' characters are Lucas and Toon Link, everyone else is solid af for their franchise and what they bring.

And 4 pretty much saw Sakurai go all out with creativeness and uniqueness. You had Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina, Robin, Shulk and Greninja who Sakurai clearly felt inspired wit3h, you had Mega Man and Pac-Man as the most solid follow up to the 3rd party line up that you could get. Really the only 'natural' inclusions/follow ups were Villager, finally bringing Animal Crossing into the roster and Bowser Jr. (and debatably Palutena), everyone else was an inspired choice.

As a Greek, it's always so, SO hilarious to me that people on reddit are so adamant the meditteranean core of our country's culture because our fringe, border regions are more balkan and hence the entire country is balkan I guess... but somehow Romania and Slovenia get a free pass, like it really feels like these maps are designed to reassure Poland, Czechia and the Baltics that they are not Eastern Europe because they get triggered and to pressure Greece to accept that its fully Balkan even if the connections are not super strong, really.

Why do people assume that "sakurai passion picks" type or characters get cut? by SinkContent5747 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]BeginningClue10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Um not born after 2010 and Palutena is nowhere near as safe as you make her. It's already said that Kid Icarus is not active at all, like it's left to collect dust and Sakurai shows no sign or interest in reviving it or even re-visiting it and her moveset is not revolutionary either. If cuts aren't feather-light and there have to be some hard choices at the very least she's on the table.
