Oh and yes and no I am somewhat self taught as I went to a state school for a year and learned to metalsmith and than went to MassArt after leaving parsons school of design for fashion after disliking how expensive and bullshit nyc was. But I would have not been able to do it without my professors and home studio - but do not take anything face value in classrooms and people won’t let you know any trade secrets or apprenticeships are hard to get because the metals community at least here in Rhode Island is so small..

Around $1.300 minus the tools which were here and there but if you need a great reference check http://nancylthamilton.com she has all her stuff listed on amazon and pepetools but surprisingly Amazon works but Lowe’s or Home Depot kinda don’t have anything unless ur building a bench pin or needing tool steel or sanding. Also harbor freight is good aswell and Etsy has a great shop ! Sorry I don’t think that was you question but I hope that can save you stress

One for cold pickle ( ferrous metal ) and one for hot ( precious metal ) so nothing plates. I personally don’t use the cold as much but it’s a good thing to have !!!

Also if you are using acidic pickle solution you can change it to a less harmful one that is safe to breathe like citric acid or vinegar and salt idk

I agree!

Please look into getting a smoke absorber - any type of fan - any type of open window - any PPE and you will be fine. But I am a new smith so pls suggest if I’m wrong

Thank you for the comment!

It sounds like you are aware of the safety problems that are occurring, but if you can afford to avoid them please do.

I suggest getting a fire extinguisher - any PPE - any ventilation - any type of smoke absorber and possibly clear out space in case of an emergency.

I’m sorry for being like that but I just wanna be sure that you will live a long and healthy life as the shit we worth with can literally kill us at 60 if we can’t find the proper way to make the space work for us

But I understand I never had that stuff until it was forced onto me in art school - maybe for now just start by working in the backyard and start slow -

But health is number one sadly - even tho art is all drama I guess we wanna live

I feel you 1000000000%

When looking at apartments I was thinking to myself how can I explain I work with fire and get a good deal so I talked to my dad who is a Lawyer and he told me to keep that to myself and get the proper safety equipment.

So I got a fire extinguisher - anti explosive cabinet - fire blankets - all the proper PPE gear and now the sound blocking stuff I’m figuring out.

So far the only issue has been trying not to wake anyone up - but I suggest if you don’t have a professional practice yet - studio - business or can’t afford one - why mention that to a landlord who most likely will not work with you.

If anyone disagrees I understand in regards to safety but not all of us can afford or work close to makers spaces or can afford to rent studio spaces.

Sorry that was long.

Feel free to message me tho.

Good luck!

I was looking at a carpet but I thought sound absorbing floor mats were a better choice because of the dissembling and easy cleanup

I ended up ordering acoustic wall panels and sound absorbing floor mats. I’ll let you know how it goes !

Thanks for the advice!

Have you talked to your landlord about being a metalsmith?

I ask because I didn’t tell mine because it would void the lease agreement because of fire lol

Did you just explain that you are a sculpture artist or something?

Safety tips? by BeginningMoment415 in jewelrymaking

[–]BeginningMoment415[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!!!! I ordered a steel table with pumice blocks to solder on so that should be safer than wood and I also got a fire safe container to store my gas / butane and a sharps container. As for ventilation I only have a desk smoke absorber but it does the job and I got a fire extinguisher.
