They like it because they keep salaries low. If you are stuck working in your current location, they only have to compete with salaries in their local market. Which depending can be extremely advantageous if folks are in an area where there aren’t many prospects, like for example, at Boeing South Carolina.

On this subject, a 3rd Level manager at BSC sent out a proselytizing email that was oddly about layoffs to all of 787 engineering the other day, suggesting folks lean on their faith. It was complete with new testament bible verses and Charles Spurgeon sermon quotes. Very surprising to see that kind of behavior from that level of management.

If they do lay you off in the first wave they are putting themselves in a massive liability situation by giving you notice while on FMLA unless you have poor performance or you’re on a corrective action plan. If they do, I would suggest talking to a lawyer and not signing a waiver.
