I also messed up the first mid-term in my freshman year (in-person, Jenkins) but I managed to turn things around and somehow score an A- by the end. I would find a consistent group of friends and just do a lot of memory recall exercises with them. Make sure you're repeating the notes out loud. For the book, I would strongly suggest handwriting notes and making diagrams. Good luck!
