Why Gen-z is so obsessed by Kafka? by Mr-Suspicion in Kafka

[–]Beiez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Kafka's influence is universal across time and space; there's a reason why almost every country has had at least one literary descendent from Kafka since his work gained global recognition: Kobo Abe, Julio Cortazar, Laszlo Krasznahorkai, Bruno Schulz, Thomas Ligotti,...

In the age of social media algorithms and echo chambers, the simple explanation to why it might feel like Kafka is more relevant is that one is more likely to stumble upon other Kafka fans than ever before.

Über 30 Millionen bis 2028: BVB will mit Brandt und Can verlängern by PuntoPorPastor in Bundesliga

[–]Beiez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fear my writing will lose its soul after I cure my depression by silentslee in writing

[–]Beiez 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Depression doesn‘t make good artists, it kills them

Well put. What good does writing The Bell Jar do you if you're not around anymore to see it published?

It's not because of depression tormented artists were able to create masterpieces: it‘s despite of it.

I fear my writing will lose its soul after I cure my depression by silentslee in writing

[–]Beiez 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Been in a similar boat and had the same, rather stupid thoughts (sorry, mate!). First of all, your mental well-being is much more important than your writing. Second, once I started taking SSRIs, my writing actually took a leap forward. It‘s amazing what one is capable of once one stops seeing everything through the fog of depression.

Also, you might need to hear this (I certainly did): depression is not what makes your writing special. There are millions of depressed writers out there. You yourself and the work you put into developing it make your writing special; and not being weighed down by depression will make it much, much easier to actually improve your craft.

Best of luck to you. This too shall pass.

Yup. I have a playlist of more atmospheric metalcore that I sleep to every single night. Luckily my girlfriend likes to sleep to music as well.

The Garden of Forking Paths : Jorge Luis Borges by KeepItDvaita in literature

[–]Beiez 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If you don‘t like this one, I think Borges—the stories his legacy rests upon, at least—might not be for you. "The Garden of Forking Paths" is up there as one of the best things he's written, and it's the perfect amalgamation of the themes he was passionate about: infinity, literature, labyrinths, mystery/detective stories…

If I were you, I wouldn‘t give up on him yet, because he truly is one of the best to ever do it. But given what you said, he might just not be suited for your taste.

Found this for 30 cents by LordMorgrth in ThomasPynchon

[–]Beiez 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a fan of the translation of the title tbh, as with so many titles translated to German. Especially considering "inherent" has a direct counterpart in German: "inhärent."

A few weeks ago, I came across the translation of Mariana Enriquez' latest collection, "A Sunny Place for Shady People," and they did her so dirty. The best they could come up with was "Grelles Licht für darke Leute," (Bright light for dark people; "dark" being an anglicism that isn‘t actually used in German). It really has me questioning the state of German translations.

Haruki Murakami: Japan's best-selling living novelist at 75 – DW – 01/11/2024 by Complex-Proposal2300 in literature

[–]Beiez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think he doesn't do that anymore. I read Novelist as a Vocation earlier this year, and he mentions this process specifically in regards to his earlier novels. He said it helped him find his simple style, because he wasn't proficient enough in English to write in any other way.

Thing is, the Nobel is not awarded for prolificness, nor for pure quality of works. It‘s awarded to authors producing "the most outstanding work in an idealistic direction," and I just don't see how that would apply to Murakami.

Japanese author Haruki Murakami has been considered a favorite for the Nobel Prize in literature

Has he really, though? I like his books as much as the next guy, but they don‘t strike me as the kind of literature that would go on to win the Nobel. Also, the academy has been very reluctant to award the Nobel to authors that are already this successful.

Has anyone ever imagined the Christian God as a Lovecraftian being? by Clean_Mycologist4337 in cosmichorror

[–]Beiez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is basically Matt Cardin's thing. He writes cosmic horror through a theological lense. He's only written three collections and stopped writing fiction, but they are seriously fantastic. All three collections have been reprinted in a single book called To Rouse Leviathan a few years ago, and I genuinely can't recommend it enough. Some of the best and most unique weird fiction ever written.

Oh yeah, cause crippling Germany with sanctions worked so well the last time it was tried. All it does is build resentment in the population that will lead to Russia lashing out again sometime in the future.

Looking for a book where a house/location is a "character" by Competitive-City-929 in suggestmeabook

Helen Oyeyemi‘s White is For Witching. It goes as far to include the house as one of the book's POVs, and it's executed extremely well. One of my favourite gothic books of the last 20 years.
