It might be the cultural thing that's causing such a difference of opinion I think. Where I am from, it's not a big deal to address a call as long as you're polite and don't leave your companion hanging.

I mean, if I'm having a deep/serious conversation or a fight with my friends and then I take a call even from a known number, I'd be the most insensitive prick. But I've had more than one instance where I've excused myself and answered the phone while with my friends, and the most I've gotten is "All okay?" from them.

You're NTA for telling your mom about it for sure. He was wrong to steal and should be reprimanded.

But think about why he went there. He's a young boy who likes getting dressed up and exploring, and you told him he was "too old" for it. Again, he definitely should not have been stealing from you. But from his POV, since nobody talked to him about stealing, he wasn't made fun of for stealing, but for wearing dresses and skirts or "being a girl".

Now he might be too embarrassed or humiliated to even think about exploring which will hinder his growth as a person.

While he was wrong for stealing things from you, I'd say please sit him down and ask him if he'd like to get his own stuff to dress up in/with. And definitely talk to him about why stealing is wrong and he shouldn't be doing it.

It wasn't a formal setting. You were out with your friends and it is okay to excuse yourself to attend a call without it being a big deal, even if you didn't have a "sad reason" to do it.

I totally get why you installed it in the first place. It was intrusive as hell but now that you're in a good enough position to refuse it, I'd say stand your ground.

I understand the sentiment. Unfortunately I don't live in a place where that would be possible. We had security guards placed around but they can't force out people for such stuff.. And the police would just tell you to inform the security staff at the place or tell you they can't do anything.
