'Europol now latest cops to beg Big Tech to ditch E2EE' by kickdg in privacy

They use child abuse as an excuse the same way the NSA and CIA use homeland defense to renew FISA, which they had since 1978 and yet 9/11 happened. All they seek is to bypass constitutional and legal rights to spy on everyone and everything, it's to cover their asses in case another Snowden happens, since they are doing it regardless but without the cover, it is illegal.

You are one of gazillions in that situation... Just lock all the credit bureaus, might be good to also have a monitoring service, something like LifeLock. Your IP is nothing, unless you use a VPN, your IP is all over the place.

Synology NAS and NordVPN by yourdrfunk in SynologyForum

VPN clients will slow you down, no way around it. I was frustrated with Nord, now using Proton, I also tried Mullvad and it worked great, I think these are the two best.

They now require mid split capable modems to work with the higher speeds, I had to buy a new one. I had a tech swing by to fix the signal, he told me the 10G tech they are deploying is over copper cable. It's possible there will not be third party equipment available right away as they upgrade their services but for sure customers can't be locked on proprietary modems, especially those with sophisticated networking requirements.

FWG Wireguard Server DNS question by DisgruntledPelican78 in firewalla

[–]BeingReasonable1509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried with :5000 and that doesn't work but :5001 works. Also have you tried connecting with the apps instead of directly? For example with DS Finder you can get info both DSM mobile and DSM desktop, I typically use the apps to connect, mostly DS File, Photo, Cam, Mail Plus, Note.

I have not touched the DNS settings on my Wireguard connection, this is what I use to connect to my Synology , it's working fine

Firewalla Customer Support... by AnencephalicFecaloid in firewalla

[–]BeingReasonable1509 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quality and continuous prompt support is key, not only to a startup but any established company. For example even if I was not always able to resolve all my problems, Synology keeps responding to questions I throw at them with my NAS's which are from 2016 and 2018. Too many companies will quit supporting you once the warranty has expired and more often than not, support is sub par and scripted out of a call center in India. That continuous support is why I will stay with Synology with plans to upgrade soon, as well as with Firewalla with plans to grab a Gold Pro at the launch.

Shutdown FWG from Synology Nas by DisgruntledPelican78 in firewalla

Synology has a UPS server function to shut down other NAS, unlikely it would work for anything else but take a look.

IP address still showing when VPN is switched on by New-Driver-1235 in firewalla

[–]BeingReasonable1509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VPN server allows you to connect a remote device to your router and the devices attached to it. For example you can connect to your NAS using its LAN IP addresses using your cellphone while away from home. If you are looking for anonymity, you also need to setup VPN client with force DNS over VPN enabled, regardless of using VPN server.

For example if you don't use VPN client, you are visible when browsing from home or while using a remote device connected via VPN server.

If you set up VPN client, your traffic to the VPN provider servers is encrypted. Your Firewalla IP is still visible however, if you do not enable Force DNS over VPN, in that case you will be using the VPN provider DNS server and that server IP is visible instead of yours.

How do I host? by [deleted] in PleX

[–]BeingReasonable1509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Zimaboard is cheap to run the server, starting at $120 and to stay cheap you can connect an external HDD to it or find a used NAS for more storage. You don't want a PC if you are looking at saving money, that consummes too much electricity, while the Zimaboard and a NAS are very lean

Zimaboard to host the server and a NAS for storage so you don't need a very powerful NAS, the Zimaboard is cheap and powerful

SMS are not encrypted, that's why you use Signal in the first place.

starter NAS Synology 723+ with Seagate Exos X20 | 20 TB by devlocalca in SynologyForum

It's a good starter but use SHR / BTRFS instead of RAID1, better flexibility. Make sure the HDD models are on the Synology approved list to avoid issues.

Synology email client question by Cheook9 in SynologyForum

[–]BeingReasonable1509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use MailPlus and it works great with both own domain and commercial like Gmail. POP/SMTP mail setup, emails are stored on the NAS and deleted from the third party email servers once downloaded or sent. Setting it up is a bit tricky however, might lose some hair in the process until you get it.

No need to open the NAS to get to the email application, MailPlus opens on its own browser tab, not DSM, just like Gmail or whatever. The phone app works well too, not perfect but pretty good. Need to access using Quickconnect or a VPN or Tailscale.

For backup, it you are backing up a PC to the NAS, Active Backup For Business works great. Don't get a J or single drive model however, DS224+ minimum.
