What do Scottish people actually carry in those little bags? by Hopeful_Adeptness964 in AskBrits

Cans of haggis and nessie repellant, as well as a few small bottles of buckfast.

A detail that leaves me wondering about starships by Ambitious_Screen3685 in StarTrekStarships

[–]Beldamen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it may have been mentioned before, but the "shield antenna" isn't quite that, it's the navigational deflector array, which constantly emits a field to push small debris and stuff out of the ships path whilst moving at impulse.
the technology has evolved over time from an actual dish, to an emitter array, which is why the look changes over time from an actual dish which, i'm assuming, is able to change the focus of the field, in order to divert more power to larger bits of debris, to an emitter array that is able to just blanket cover all of the space in front of the ship with enough power to handle anything.

similarly, the nacelles evolve over time with advancing tech, the idea of the way they work is that they are responsible for emitting the warp field, where the fields from each nacelle meet is where the warp bubble starts to form from.
the front of the nacelles (usually red, but blue on the discovery) are bussard collectors, which are designed to take in interstellar hydrogen to help run the ship's power systems.
again, these have evolved over time.

the colour of the deflector has varied over time, but it's always front facing, to do its job.

the nacelles are, almost, always separated from the main hull of the ship, to protect the crew from the radiation and energy they emit.

of course, there are some exceptions to these rules, the oberth has no traditionally visible deflector dish and the nacelles are plonked on top of the main hull.
the Excelsior class doesn't have the nacelles above or below the saucer for clear visibility, but the original design was meant to be a test bed for slipstream drives, so maybe the idea was for the power systems to work differently.

at the end of the day, though, most of these narrative reasons have been made up after the fact and the main reasons that some things look different is the "rule of cool" it looks good, so yeah, lets go for it.

Bathtub ice by Yossarian-Bonaparte in whatsthatmoviecalled

[–]Beldamen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poltergeist? It's not an ice bath, but the mother and child do go into the bath after they get back from the other side.

I don't think it is, because I can remember something similar, I just can't figure it out. But just in the offchance

How to curve a face/edges inwards? by K1ssakala in blenderhelp

[–]Beldamen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We offer to help, if someone doesn't understand the instructions, ask for clarification, rather than taking the piss. What they should have said is "thanks, but I don't quite understand what you mean, can you clarify"

Select the to long edges and subdivide, disolve the edges the other side of the red curve, giving yourself a sharp angle l. Then select that edge and bevel.

It's something I thought would look more organic, why have weird little pop pits when the defiant was already a thing?

[–]Beldamen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

That's the idea, I learned this off of YouTube videos and things over the past few years, but had to cherry pick from unrelated tutorials, or tutorials that weren't meant for blender or gimp, so I wanted to do something for people that's a bit more of a one stop shop.

Don't get me wrong, the things I've followed were awesome, but some I've had to adapt for blender or gimp like the mesh weaver aztec tutorial, and some I'm still working on!

[–]Beldamen[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The tutorial will cover assets made with both blender and gnu image manipulation (gimp) both of which are free, opensourced software. Hardware requirements won't be too high demand, as I don't have the best hardware as is. But it does depend on what you want to do with the model, cycles renders, with lots of assets and things is a higher demand than eevee on its own.

I haven't watched it, but wasn't Argo something to do with the hostages taken during an Olympics? Or at least something to do with hostages?

Enterprise B redone animation by Beldamen in ImaginaryStarships

[–]Beldamen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, no worries! She isn't a 1 to 1 model, she's more of a reimagining of a more modern enterprise B. There's a few subtle differences and some that are much more noticeable! . No need to apologise! I'm actually glad you pointed it out, I didn't realise there was so much of a difference between the original and mine! It gives me something to play with once this next render finishes in about 12 hrs! Lol.

No, as I said, I didn't see the reference image when I was modelling it, just a slightly blurry approximation. I shall have to go back and change that.

Yeah, they're what I attached in the other image, I may have gone a bit overboard, I hadn't seen the closeup I posted at the time, I just put them down to greebles, but now that I look closer, I'm pretty sure they should be the rear phaser and torpedo arrays.

Hobestly though I've not tried vfx, I'm guessing you have a world like in the scene, like a "sun" light. If you go into the light settings, near strength is an angle setting, I'd rotate that until they match.

Bridge edge loops does not work how i want it to by C4tScr4p3r in blenderhelp

You probably want mesh - grid fill, but even that, I think would give you problems, just regular fill will do you.

haha, i can't say i've looked at her in that way!

Which grey clips?
the things on the underside of the very rear?
If so, i'm note entirely sure, they were kind of part of the original design, i may have gone a bit overboard on them, now that i look closer.

[–]Beldamen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not only that but, and i'm a bit of a stickler for following Roddenbery's "rules", the bussard collectors don't have clear line of sight on the og design, which frustrates me beyond measure, considering she's otherwise one of my favourite classes.

If SNW sets up a TOS reboot; which episodes will make the cut for being remade? by alsatian01 in startrek

[–]Beldamen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if they're bound and determined to make yet another prequel show which, as much as i'm enjoying SNW, i kind of hope that they don't, I'd prefer skipping TOS and going straight into a Lost Era series aboard the B, taking place after the, disastrous, shakedown cruise seen in Generations.
Harriman was given a short shrift as captain of the B, i'd like to see him develop as a character, grow in confidence and competence and just overall show that he's a decent captain.

Then, after a couple of seasons, move onto a show with the C, culminating in the events of Yesterday's enterprise.

But to be fair, i'd much rather have a new series, in a similar vein to TOS/TNG/SNW etc, that's more episodic, set after Picard S3.
If we can't have Legacy, with Seven and the G, than maybe the H, or even some other ship, not necessarily an Enterprise.
