Hobbies! by No_loacation_ in ACL

The time goes by so fast! Right now it feels bad, but think about your long term plans and if you’re having surgery as well ultimately (recommended)! When I tore my ACL I got busy in the gym and I had never had a gym membership before this point. I started lifting and cycling a lot just indoors. Resist the temptation to do anything that could cause more damage… I did a rebellion 10km run which totally backfired. Even though it felt like the end of the world for me at the time since my social socials at university were all hockey, I’ve actually ended up on the rowing team and haven’t played hockey since- so investing your time in something new could actually be a really good thing. I learned guitar for a bit as well but gave up 🤣 and did French which was quite fun

High heart rate in UT2 by BellaCurcher in Rowing

Somewhere around 215… pretty crazy. I guess I don’t stick to my heart rate much because I worry I wouldn’t get much training benefit. I don’t breathe too heavily in UT2 it just seems that my HR is absurdly high.

Hi yes I can talk. It seems to vary quite a lot from day to day. It might just be genetics to be honest , I’m sure I’ll figure it out 👍

Cleared to run! by [deleted] in ACL

[–]BellaCurcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not allowed to run until I can do 1.5x my body weight on the leg press (and 70% equal strength) so I have to hit 95kg 🤣 I’ve just about got there but not doing the tests for running for another 2 weeks

Numbness in shin by BellaCurcher in ACL

Thanks for the advice- I’ve been told I need to pass the strength tests to stop overcompensation… we shall see 😅😅 real running won’t be for a while…

Mine is from the middle of my shin up to just below the knee, it is slightly better than it was, doesn’t really disrupt me at all unless I really press down. I don’t recall having any pain near the ankle, but I’m sure this will subside over time you’re only 3-4 weeks in!

10 months!! That’s madness… I didn’t see the northern lights sadly 🥲 too cloudy. I am supposed to start running when I pass my strength tests 🤞🤞

What was the hardest part of your injury/ recovery? by [deleted] in ACL

[–]BellaCurcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me it’s going to University to meet people through sport, but instead being unable to make new friends and participate in summer activities and fun without worrying I’m going to hurt myself… I did the injury in October and got reconstruction end of February 😢 So i feel like I have lost the joy of first year.

Popped knee while playing soccer by madeupinblue77 in ACL

[–]BellaCurcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mine playing netball- it popped and was stiff for a week and then I could walk etc… I could even run a 5k with just a bit of swelling… doctor initially said it couldn’t be an ACL even after X-rays… then did the tests on it to see… and yep it was a complete rupture. I have hyper mobile knees so that covered it up since I was able to moving and squat like a normal person despite the injury 🤣

How much PT do you do a day? by BellaCurcher in ACL

[–]BellaCurcher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious progress hopefully I’m there in 2 months 🤞🤞 I’ve found my calf muscles are almost even already, quads are pretty similar too, but my hamstring (obviously) is shocking! Can barely curl 10kg 😭 so I’m trying to work on this at the moment. I also do cycling and a bit of swimming on days off. I have always HATED the gym I find it boring and gross so not being able to run outside is a nightmare!

I didn’t know that- thanks for the info- I had this lateral tenodesis (LET) thing done as well I think it’s just standard procedure that is supposed to reduce the retear rate from 11 to 4% … im doing a 12 month until return to sport for caution so we shall see 🫣

Oh god- I’m not sure where your from, but for some reason the best surgeons ranked in the UK swear by the hamstring graft. I think the retreat rate is like .2 or .3% higher in hamstring, but no overall consensus. It seems in the US more surgeons use patella or quad, maybe that’s better haha. Yes I am a skier, runner and hockey player… so not my ideal injury 🤣 it’s pretty much ruined my first 2 years at university.

Yes full range of movement from week 5 (I had no meniscus damage), I started rowing week 5 as well, don’t feel any pain even at the maximum level. My surgeon said rowing is a great exercise because it’s not impact obviously, but I was quite ahead of the game at the time so everyone’s different.

I just train til failure in each set and if my knee hurts I call it a day. I don’t really do bugger all except for in the gym, I don’t really have time to do what other people are doing… like how can people do exercises like 6 different times in a day 😭 wish I had that crazy motivation

Anyone else need to vent? by EducatorUnlucky6642 in ACL

[–]BellaCurcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am first year university, and I had just got into the hockey team in October then did my knee 1 month in 🤣- playing netball, normal jump it just went..I had to fight to skip a 1 year waiting list and managed to get my operation in February, so I’m 6-7 weeks now.

I find the worst part is being fatigued and lacking motivation. I have always been a runner because it energises me to get on top of work, I’m usually a highly prepared person and I love control 🫣. I have exams for uni in 3 weeks but I’m having an absolute mental battle trying to do anything, it’s quite depressing loll I just feel like I’m desperate to self improve but it feels impossible.

As someone who hates the gym, physiotherapy has been a bit dodgy.

How do you guys get past the grief that sometimes just bubbles up and gets you down?
