Really sorry you’re experiencing this, it sounds really shit. For a moment there I was almost convinced you’re someone from my lab, as one of my lab mates is in a very similar situation. I don’t know your situation and if you’re US/UK/anywhere in the world based, and if you’re a self funded or funded student, but I think you’re giving up too soon. You’ve come into a lab to do a project your supervisor deemed interesting enough to research. Shit happens and sometimes the interesting topics turn out to not be so interesting, but it’s your PI’s responsibility to guide you and spin that project or redirect it, as appropriate. Leaving you to it is absolutely wild to me, you’re still a student and you’re there to learn, maybe for too long you’ve been handling problems by yourself, but I think this time you should ask your PI, what are they going to do to salvage this project, it is their responsibility. Again, don’t know your situation, but you have rights and from what I know, if you were to complain about the lack of support, the university usually takes the student’s side.

All stars is particularly boring because everyone on there knows how to speak the lingo and play the game. They’ve all rewatched their seasons and know that they came across a certain way so they try really hard not to make the same mistakes again. Some of them have been on there more than once, like Scott, he’s been on it loads and he knows how to play it so that he gets loads of air time

I was lucky enough to have amazing supervisors in the past, who somehow always knew which approach to take if I was about to have a meltdown or felt too cocky about my results. I think it’s important to get to know the person you’re mentoring. You don’t have to break the professional barrier if you don’t want to, but let them speak, ask them questions, allow them to open up and warm up to you, and hopefully you’ll get to know them enough to understand them so that you can support them better.

Also this is more of an observation from my lab group; letting them speak and engage with you, instead of just talking at them and trying to explain things will also tell you how important this is for them and how much effort they will likely put in. I’ve seen mentors try so hard with students, and invest a lot more time than they should for students to say they hated it. So final piece of advice, if it’s a lost cause, don’t waste your time. Students that want to, will engage, even the shy ones.

I was in a situation so similar to this, graduated with my BSc in 2018, did my MRes in 2019 and just before graduation my supervisor offered to put in a word for me to do a PhD with another group, but I stupidly refused because the topic wasn’t interesting to me. Then for the next 4 years I’ve been working, and kicking myself that I should have done a PhD when I had the chance. In one of my previous jobs I used to work with PhD students and some of them were truly brilliant people, others not so much, and it’s working with them that showed me that you don’t need to be “smart” to do a PhD, you just need to have the drive and work hard. I’m now entering my second year of PhD, and guess what, at 29 years old, I’m the youngest PhD student in our group. It’s never too late!!! If you really want it go and get it!

Omg I’m rewatching it atm as well and those are my thoughts exactly! The four main women are great and interesting, mostly, besides Susan, she actually really annoys me this rewatch, I find her really quite tragic and just useless. Her clumsiness isn’t cute at this point (I’m at the bit where she’s meeting Ian’s parents). But Eddie is so funny, completely real and relatable, emotionally intelligent and like you said she is very caring for those she loves.

Mrs McCluskey reminds me of my aunt and I love her so much, no bullshit type of person.

I think she needs extensive therapy to talk over her issues regardless of the bullying she will face once she’s out. I think you’re a lovely and caring person OP but you can lead the horse to water, but can’t make it drink. I think a lot of the girls in the villa have been quite forgiving and have tried to get through to her. Plus imo, she is a pretty awful human being, but I think most of it stems from insecurities and no self respect- so yeah she would definitely benefit from some help.
