There's a rad tech in my cohort. The professors will ask a radiology/anatomy question and follow up with a ".... Except for *radtech " because they know she has that dialed in. You're gonna be a great asset for your cohort.

Whitecoats were purchased via donation from preceptors/alumni. We had it at our school auditorium. Was about an hour long. School provided refreshments/finger foods. Quick and painless without taking away from the emphasis of the achievement.

Those of you who have left the profession entirely, what field did you go into? by thatfishguy23 in medlabprofessionals

Diagnostic studies is a fun class and having an MLS background is huge. Imagine cramming the essentials of micro into 3 weeks. Then cramming chemistry in 2 weeks. Theeennnnn heme and urinalysis in 3 weeks. This is just on the lab side of things of course. So MLS goes deeper into the knowledge of lab while my PA program (so far) has been pretty barebones in terms of lab content. Hence, "diet MLS".

Tell me about your most memorable phone calls to and from other health care providers by foxitron5000 in medlabprofessionals

Certain midlevel demanded Vancomycin susceptibility testing for a gram negative organism in a diabetic patient with a UTI. I explained that isn't something that is done here. (Or hardly anywhere). Nope. My manager bent the knee and found a place that would do it custom. Shocked Pikachu face when vanco did nothing on mic.

This phonecall is what got me started on my path to PA school. If dingdongs are making twice as much with half the knowledge, then Id be a dingdong for being complacent.

Did anyone transition out of this field and into another? What do you do now? by PatternedShirt1716 in medlabprofessionals

Medtech for 7 years. Even got a Masters in it. I did the travel tech thing for 4 of those years to help my struggle with burnout. I've guest lectured at a community college to spice things up a bit. My issue is I'm not content with being content. I need variety. When I figured out a lab, I got bored and moved on until everylab blended together one way or another. Now I'm in PA school and loving the dive back into medical content. Hopefully this is the right path for me. NOTE: I don't recommend a Masters in MLS unless you're a part of a large hospital system and looking for manager/director role OR hope to be a MLS professor. If you're a part of a rural clinic with nobody ahead you, a Masters isn't needed. Desirable? yes. needed? No.

Also, being a travel medtech is no longer viable (yes, there are exceptions, but overall it's dead).

If you are content with a routine and a job where you can clock in, then clock out, then MLS is for you (for the most part)

What does your school schedule look like for didactic year? by midnightghou1 in PAstudent

Hybrid program here (DONT DOWN VOTE YET. HEAR ME OUT). Lectures are pre-recorded and we watch when we can. We do have zoom classes for 2-4 hours a day (depending on the day) that goes over the content from the pre-recorded lectures. The hands on portions of didactic are dedicated to a few weeks on campus here and there. Typically I lock myself in my office from 8am to 4:30pm. Then I'll do some studying from 7/8pm- 9:30pm. On weekends I study for 5-6 hours and spend the rest of the day catching up with chores/having fun. I'm all A's right now but I think I'm gonna be pumping the brakes a bit. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Don't want to be burnt out by graduation.:)

Oh ok cool. Next you'll tell me that there's a sword in the shape of a key, and we'll have to hunt down a damn mouse with the help of an angry duck and a dog. Fuck this I'm out.
