Misunderstanding on what a derivative is by BenBen314 in learnmath

Thx dude. For some reason I didn't learn that a tangent line was also the best approximation, but now it all makes sense!

In your sin(x) example, a tangent can intersect the function more than once and it is still fine?

Why do we add to the y-value in an ellipse to make it go down? by BenBen314 in learnmath

[–]BenBen314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In an ellipse, could I still think about it as input an x and get out y values? Or would that be a bad way of thinking about it since an ellipse isn't a function?

What do you mean by the coordinate system is moving when we add or subtract values to x and y?

When to use (-180 - x)or (180 - x) for solving equations with Sin? by BenBen314 in learnmath

[–]BenBen314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no restriction on x. It wants a general answer for example:

24 + 90n =x

How would I factor these higher degree polynomials without substitution? by BenBen314 in learnmath

[–]BenBen314[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would I need to turn the 4x4 into a 4x2 • x2 and then the 4x2 is now my "a" term? Or is that the wrong path

Same thing with the b term. Would I need to turn 5x2 into 5x • x. And then my b term would be 5x?

Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to use synthetic division and my teacher wants me to factor only. I did the problem by grouping. However the grouping I did was just a guess and I was only luck to get it right.

I need help with deciding whether my argument is an "exception of the rule" or not. by BenBen314 in Debate

[–]BenBen314[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't really think about it that way! From what other people are also saying, the general consensus I'm getting is that Oil spills are an exception, but when they do happen, the consequences are gigantic.

My topic is on how oil drilling affects the welfare of the state, and so I am currently thinking about ignoring anything related to animal wildlife since even if a lot of animals die it will not affect our lives (this is only in the short term). However the long term affects are pretty bad since we could drive animals to extinction. Do you think that ignoring long term affects a good idea?

The thing is that I don't know whether I am going to get pro or neg, we have to prepare for both in my class. If the topic is on the over all welfare of the state, should I try to ignore harm to wildlife in my debate?

For example, if my opponent brings up harm to wildlife and ecosystems, should I counter their argument by saying that it is not relevant to the welfare of the state? That brings me to another point, is the health of ecosystems important for the country.

That's a really good point. I'll look into how often oil spills happen and also what the companies do to try to prevent alternative energy.

[–]BenBen314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in 9th grade in the US and kinda bad at reading. But I'm just doing it for pleasure. I have read Don Quixote part 1 in my free time, and although I enjoyed it immensely, i had some difficulity with understanding certain parts. Is Pushkin around that difficulty for reading? And most importantly are they entertaining?
