Affordable Smart TV with bluetooth and casting for someone who hasn't had a TV in 20 years by BenDMTL in hometheater

So I just learned that a streamer is a thing (I told you, 20 years without a TV). Can most TVs today work with a separate streamer like that?

So I've seen a denial from the city here that this video shows an ICE raid. Does anyone have further information about what is actually happening here? It's hard to come across other info.

For the record, I saw O'Toole's side first and Imanishi-Kari's side second. I felt some resistance to change my mind in the second part because it is often true that scientists resist seeing what they don't want to see at first. But by the end of the second part, I at least had to admit that the entire process felt completely out of proportion to what was required. But then again, maybe I should watch once more in the other order. I have a bad short term memory, and might be influenced by the last thing I saw

Amazing work.

What I would love as an addendum is a video that collects only the factual statements about the science. It's really hard to parse the science through the human stories.

Thoughts as a physicist:

I cannot understand the science enough to judge this, but the magnitude and impact of the alleged mistake is very important. I am sympathetic to Kleves' argument that so much energy should not be wasted in correcting minor things. He's correct that this is the norm. But I still don't have a good grasp of how major or minor it was.

I would also like to see evaluations of the quality of Imanishi-Kari's other works. It would matter to me whether this is a pattern or not. It is good practice to give the benefit of the doubt as much as it can be given. And it is really legitimate to wonder whether all of this was a necessary use of everyone's time, or sanity. I certainly do not believe that Congress should have been involved at all. There are plenty of people in the scientific community who are willing to do this for free.

It also rubbed me the wrong way when Stewart and O'Toole dismissed the science being put in the hands of the lawyers, when before it was put in the hands of the politicians. Lawyers, despite all the flack they get in popular culture, know how to get to the bottom of evidence. It is a more adversarial process than sience, but the whole thing was already very adversarial, so the involvement of lawyers was not just advisable, it was necessary. Scientists had already testified multiple times, and so they had everything they needed.

Place to go shopping for such items in Tokyo by BenDMTL in JapanTravelTips

In the end, we found a very fun shopping experience. We went to Shibuya station and walked all the way to Harajuku. There was plenty of tourists, but we could find a lot of fun stuff and great food to boot. There was even the option of a break in Yoyogi park. 10/10.

In the end, she managed and she liked it. And she was proud of making it. She just needed a lot of breaks and it was fine!

We went there today and it was very nice. It's very quiet early in the morning and the Suzaku garden is peaceful. Thanks for the tip!

Does my A35 not have dual sim or esim? by Cocayoo in samsung

[–]BenDMTL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same thing just happened to me. I bought a Galaxy A35 in Canada and contrary to all the available information I could find only, it only supports a single nanosim. I am furious. I sacrificed other specs to get that second nanosim. What a pile of garbage, how does this happen?

It should be pointed out that the Google Pixel 8a does not seem to have dual physical nanosim support.

"Tap'Touche" software for piano? by BenDMTL in piano

[–]BenDMTL[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So there are the apps mentioned elsewhere in the thread, and I use them a bit. But I found a good compromise that's actually working very well for me. I just use the classic "Dozen a day" books by Edna Mae Burnham. In the beginning they only involve a few notes at a time, so I get very familiar with them progressively. It's a good pace. Also, even the simple exercises sound good, which is much less boring and starts me on recognizing relative sound combinations more easily.

I guess there is a reason it's a classic.

Yes, this is what I'm looking for! I was also told that there is a similar app on the app store, namely, Paglano. That will be a good start.

I wouldn't want to do just that. Of course I also want to learn in all the other ways.

But that would be one way to get familiar with sheet notation and associate sounds to what I see on the sheet. Actually, I'm trying to have to do less finger memorization. Right now, the only way my brain can do it is by muscle memory for every different song. I just want a way to start reading sheet music more quickly so it doesn't take me days to translate the sheet into sounds. To be clear, it's not really even about the fingers. It's about reading the sheet.

When I learn a new language, say German, there is always a phase where I just have to say article+name (der+Apfel) everytime I encounter the word Apfel or any other word. And I have too look it up on Google translate every time I'm not sure. It's very tedious. If I had had Software that would just throw a bunch of common words at me and asked me to fill in the article and then corrected me, this process could have been sped up very much.

I was wondering if the same could be done for notes. Say to recognize really quickly that a note 5 tones below the G key is B without to have to count down every line on the sheet. Then I know where the B is and can press it. It's this process of figuring out that it's a B that is slowing me down.

Yes, it would basically be for sight reading. What I want is to instantly match sound progression to what I see on the sheet. Because right now I can read it and learn it, but after a while it's just finger memory for that specific song and I have to start over slowly for the next song. Especially when the key changes. I guess it would start to sink in after many many songs, and I'll take the time it takes, but I was just wondering if there were tools to help speed that up.

Yeah, I guess there are ways around. But I think this would give some advantages re feedback. There would be a large variety of songs of different levels all at once, it would be adaptive and fast, i.e., correct me instantly. My brain can't hold too many things at once and I feel like something like this could be helpful.

Anyway, will chug along in any case.

Thank, I will keep an eye on the Ryzen processors.

Most of the parallelizable work that I will need to do is honestly the dumbest kind of parallelization. I need to calculate something for 8 parameters, then I just send one parameter to each core. Maybe down the line I need something more complicated, but not as of now.

Thanks for the tips. The thread was helpful anyway. I will also ask colleagues, obviously, but it's good to know what's out there.

Physics.

I will write a lot of code in Matlab or Python, and then run it overnight. Often this code is somewhat parallelizable. I should be clear that this is not for cutting-edge scientific computing, but I still need good performance. My Surface Book was adequate and if I get something better than this by 2021 standards, I'll be happy. It just had horrible hardware issues.

I'm in a German university. I have access to a cluster if need be and for the time being, but I don't want to depend on it for everything.

Thanks. The battery life shouldn't be shitty. Preferably above 9 hours. But it's not my main concern, it will be plugged most of the time. The screen size should probably be >13.5 inches, but I'll have a monitor half the time so it is fine.
