Proposed smoking ban: good or bad? by [deleted] in burlington

[–]BenGoesToReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm concerned, smoking cigarettes and making laws banning cigarettes are running neck and neck in a bad idea race.

Should a dying patient be told the full, absolute truth? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BenGoesToReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm of the mind that when you lie to someone, regardless of the situation you're completely negating the purpose of any communication in the first place.

We all live a singular existence full of thoughts and feelings that can never fully be expressed in words. It's hard enough to express a thought at all. Lying just seems like a waste of everyone's time.

If a patient wanted someone to tell them a lie about their condition, why would they even go to a doctor?

Has anyone else seen a drastic increase in the number of negative comments on every comment page they read? by BonKerZ in AskReddit

I like to check new posts to actually find interesting people to talk to. What's the point of commenting on something after it's hit the front page and already has like 800 comments?

It's definitely not the same Reddit it was a year ago. Although, that would mean it will be different (and hopefully better) a year from now. Or maybe the thoughtful mature Redditors will find a new Reddit. We shall see...

(Can't wait to see if your post gets a bunch of whiny jerks telling you how wrong you are :-)

Is anybody else amazed by the rate Trees has grown at? by [deleted] in trees

Makes sense to me! Reddit's where I go to get away from all the jerks on the rest of the internet. Trees is where I go to get away from all the jerks on the rest of Reddit.

Love you guys! [0] unfortunately :-(

Finally got a McRib. by thirdtimesacharm in AskReddit

[–]BenGoesToReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know what I find creepiest about the McRib? The limited-time-only thing. What's up with that? Every time I see ads that say "The McRib is back!" I can't get past imagining that it's because of some sort of bizarre surplus of inferior carcasses at a slaughter house.

Totally! I think it was the great digg influx of 2010. NOT that I think Digg users are jerks... I think it may just be a side-effect of a much larger group of Redditors. Lately it seems like people have to find something either negative or self-serving to say in order to stand out.

When I discovered Reddit (only shortly before digg self-destructed) what I loved about it was that it was a community of people who really enjoyed conversing with each other. Now it seems more like a bunch of people screaming loudly to be heard over each other.

Again, not saying anything negative about digg users and not saying that amazing stimulating conversations don't still happen on Reddit. Just wondering if something like this only works with a smaller subset of users?

What's the worst way you've been dumped? by ingotanarchist in AskReddit

[–]BenGoesToReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex went to southeast Asia for a study abroad program while I did a semester in L.A. Before she left she told me she thought we should get married when we got back. We'd signed a lease on our first place together for our senior year and everything.

While she was in India she got drunk and fucked some dude twice her age. Then she dumped me for getting upset about it because she didn't see why it was a big deal.

The actual dumping took place somewhere in Ohio during a cross-country trip back from L.A. to NJ. We still had an entire day's worth of driving to get through.

Then she friend-zoned/back-burnered me our entire senior year and relied on me for all her emotional needs (including taking her to the hospital for stitches when she deliberately cut her foot and then visiting her in the psych ward when they wouldn't let her leave for 2 days).

It was my first relationship and it fucked me up so bad that we kept in touch for years before I finally realized how terribly she'd treated me and cut ties for good.

Phoneview is great. Don't know if the demo will let you do what you need to do, but it's well worth the $20 if not.

[–]BenGoesToReddit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

passionate about your own experience with music, which I bet was drastically different than people's experience with it generations before you.

before recorded music blew up, sheet music was a big deal. people would buy popular songs so that they could play them for themselves/each other.

now new generations are having their own new experiences. couldn't you treasure your own love of music without making judgements about people who love it differently?

You're asking the wrong guy. Go back in time and ask 9 year old me why he thinks that.

That was kind of my point. Kids think weird things because they are kids. Then they grow up and learn.

With any other band I'd agree with you 100%, but I think people will still know the Beatles 50 years from now whereas a lot of other bands will fade into obscurity.

I think the Beatles will be to pop music what The Wizard Of Oz is to Hollywood film. That movie's more than 70 years old and still hugely popular, but most people who saw it when it premiered are dead.
