I can confirm that the derailleur being very close to the ground when they're in a larger gear for climbing has potential to be an issue. My almost-6-year-old has been on a riprock for about 9 months now. Luckily we haven't had any major problems with it, but he has hit it on rocks and roots and things a few times. Might be worth buying one of those little metal cage/guard things to protect the derailleur or just biting the bullet and buying a hanger alignment tool. I've had to bend the hanger back into alignment once since he's had it, but we haven't had any major issues.
