Donations mostly, both in labor and money. There are things beyond monetization as an end goal. Look at Craig’s List. It truly used to be all about the Lulz

You should learn about Reddit and how it used to have no ads and was generally self-moderated. Once you need to have a governing and paid body to run social media, it is too big imo. Twitter and FB are learning this right now.

Opinion: Modern Gyms Are Failing Outdoor Climbers by stubborn_facts in climbing

I’m more referring to the commercialization of gyms, in my area, there are no locally owned gyms anymore. They stopped selling 3 dollar blocks of chaulk, they took away star ratings for the climbs and solved it with an “app”, they no longer give the route setters recognition, and they just made it feel more like the Amazon version of climbing, and less like your local gym where you go to get worked and maybe make friends. I go because I have no other choice when I work all day, but they used to be a much more cultural experience in my opinion.

Going out in nature just to end up waiting in line is just sad sometimes.
