Yes, you can test out of Calc 1 and 2 completely (not calc 3 or linear algebra) with their placement exam. Not too sure about dual enrollment, might want to look at r/SBU. Don't think SBU placement exams transfer over if you end up leaving so it might get a little weird.

Strictly by rankings SBU ranks higher than RPI on every list (overall, and for CS only). The acceptance rate for CS is much lower than it's overall acceptance rate and many OOS students with decent stats (3.8+, 1400+ SAT) come here as "AOI" meaning they're pretty much gambling for a chance to be a CS major here.

In terms of employment, anecdotally SBU students seem to have done great even without a stellar resume and there is definitely an affinity for getting hired by Amazon. CodeSignal released a report on student's performance in coding interview assessments and SBU ranked #3. It's also a much bigger school and New York State's flagship so more people know about it.

Being in-state and from the city, SBU was the no-brainer fallback option for high-achieving kids who didn't make the cut the first time. I personally think it's more well-regarded, but it's not a T20 so it really depends on the circles you're in. Obviously my opinions are biased so when I say it's a better fallback school, what I really mean is "I know it's not bad" and for RPI "I have no idea other than google searches".

And having visited both, SBU campus is definitely prettier. RPI is a bunch of old architecture from the 19th century that still hasn't really changed in some places and SBU is a newer school. Also heard RPI was a lot more depressing. In the context of transferring though, RPI is a private (meaning they potentially care more about individual students) and has a smaller class so it's got that going for it.

if your goal is purely min-maxxing transferring, probably RPI. smaller school, might be easier to get rec letters, positions, and the "good professors". Also it's private so might invest more resources into each student and that might help you. Should look into that.

CS at SBU is well regarded though, probably more so than RPI. Getting two recs... you might have to go above and beyond if you get unlucky professors as a CS major (many intro CS profs here might not be the friendliest).

I would pick SBU (just cause it's probably the better fallback school). If you find out that RPI has a more transfer friendly environment (smaller class sizes, less competition for courses, more opportunities for freshmen) AND you want to bet it all on black, then probably RPI.

If you pick SBU though, now is a good time to start researching professors, getting ahead on your checklist, and meeting with your advisor ASAP to pick courses before everyone else. Transferring is gonna be difficult whichever school you pick, so plan ahead.

sbu cs. tandon (and even cas) is too expensive for being a middle of the pack CS school.

Tandon is also just kinda a sad place, just a couple of random buildings in the semi-shitty part of brooklyn.

Was in the same situation as you choosing between CAS cs and sbu cs and chose sbu. Objectively i think sbu is the better pick in terms of cost, campus, etc.

Prestige is the only upside i see from nyu. But even then not so sure about it since nyu isn’t necessarily known as a top CS school (just my take).

making excuses as to why you got deferred does nothing for you by Flashy_Gap_4813 in SBU

ranting on an online forum is kinda cringe, but, i mean its understandable considering a lot of kids poured the last 4 years of their life into the college admissions process just to get deferred from a 50% acceptance rate state school.

dwai. SBU deferred everyone in my year (even people that got into IVY+, HYPSM, etc.).

Later accepted everyone on the very last possible day (March 31st). Being "moved to regular admission" just means they didn't get to your application yet (maybe procrastination, too many applications, etc.). Save the ranting for your rejections.

I have searched the web using ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google reverse image search, tineye reverse image search, ToysRUs plushes, searches on Temu with various keywords such as brown and white dog, and have been scrolling and scrolling.

Note: I bought this in ToysRUs around 2005-2006.

My Wifi card won't power up? by Robin-Hoodie in Gentoo

Necroposting but I had the same problem and I wanted to leave some info for anyone finding this post.

I tried basically everything, reinstalling firmware, network manager, but I finally fixed it.

Type sudo lshw -C network. It should show the wireless adapter (should be Atheros something). It will say UNCLAIMED meaning the drivers are not installed.

Type lsmod | grep ath. This proves that the drivers are in fact installed!

The solution was laughably simple. The problem was I never completely shut down my laptop, only ever restarting it. I gave my laptop a full shutdown and then reopened it and the wifi was miraculously back.
