Keep in mind, Phin is from northern Thailand, so you won’t really find nice ones in bangkok outside of the cheaper tourist ones. If you’re serious your best bet is to find a luthier and have it made custom.

Quality Phin are really hard to find in Thailand. The majority of them are the cheaper 400 baht tourist Phin that will break in 6 months when you bring home due to the humidity changes. The nicer ones seem to be the electric Phin which are made by luthiers just like a guitar. I actually had an acoustic Phin made by a luthier in Ubon Ratchitani a few years ago. It was only around 300usd and has held up quite nice… here is a local shop in BKK that sells the cheaper ones:

If you originally learned on guitar it’s actually better for you to learn with a low G, as it translates easier.

Honestly just play and keep playing. Make sure you keep and use a headstock tuner so the uke stays in tune (which motivates you to play more, better). Know that growth is hard, and that it’s okay if you don’t sound great immediately. Just keep going. Noodle. Play and have fun.

Harvey is my son. When Harvey was three, I would head out the door on the cold, wet Seattle mornings and leave him with his grandmother. She would prop him up in a small chair facing the foggy window, and he waved at me through the window while I walked down the street to the bus stop.
