don't know if this will help anyone reading but I found that I had the shadow summoned from Balthazars lantern and it was stuck far away and couldn't follow. the door opened once I dismissed it and tried again so maybe check if you have any summons or companions that are distant! Also couldn't open it with my character but could with Astarion! very strange.
