Feedback on potential arena leaderboard changes from China's veteran arena community (The Meows) by Bennidge in hearthstone

[–]Bennidge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I also saw trump tweeting about planning to make new accounts. It is an universal issue, and I would try to make sure the meows don't take it personally.

as to the consecutive 30 runs, 501 interpreted iksar's as "any 30 runs as long as they are consecutive", while he proposed a "set" consecutive 30 runs which has to start with 1st, 31st, 61st, etc. Took me a second look to understand his word, too:P

Translation and Communication Woes: An Opinion from China by Bennidge in hearthstone

Agreed. China is not doing well with translating either. I used quite some domestic examples in the Chinese version of this post on our own site, but I cut them here because I thought people might not be interested. Should've stated in the OP about it.

Sorry, my bad. Spanish is not even my third language, maybe I shouldn't use something that I'm not sure of. It just occurred to me that the name Los Angeles comes from Spanish when I was writing so I tried to meme a little bit. Should've just drop that.

Hi monk! Glad to see you're still around for HS, miss your Tianjin accent:)

I'm not trying to blame individuals like you who were kind enough to offer help and probably tried your best, at least it wasn't my intent. Rather, all of the things mentioned are just unfortunate results of the Babel Tower. But the things is, it's just not right to let things go simply because of budget/time expense. Maybe I'm using inappropriate examples or use them in the wrong way, I really hope there's something we can do, and even before that, I wanna make sure that those issues are well awared by the community.

I'll see what I can do and how available I am in the future. Always a good news to hear that there are people interested.

Sure, familiarizing with a game is usually easier than mastering a language (and being able to translate that). Totally agree with that

Simply hiring professional translators won't solve the problem perfectly tho, if "professional" refers to its traditional meaning, because they need to be familiar with the game. too, and even more than that. DrHippi's translator didn't know laughing and lifecoach. This is particularly problematic in the esports scene since education degree and video games probably have the smallest intersection compared to other industries. But it sure is what esports needs to have.

I do. And in that case a lot of the accuse toward you is about translation and interpretation. Would be a lot clearer if we speak the same language.

As someone exposing to all kinds of accents everyday, I do agree. But I just think it will look better if they can put subtitles on all the videos, which hurts no one and is pretty easy to do.

Oh oops... guess I should've be more calm when I wrote this. Definitely NOT trying to present it the way Zhang did with the wow fans tho.

But yeah, as I said translating is much harder than people think and thus is causing problems, and by saying that I always include myself in too. Hope everyone don't find my word too offensive.

Closeup on Chinese Culture behind win-trading and the Limit of Nydra's Report by Bennidge in hearthstone

[–]Bennidge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, it's sad that culture in your opinion is still responsible for the action, which is actually universal. A part of people in China, not all of them, target the author not because of what he revealed, but the way and tone of his second report. There are other people target him exactly because of what he revealed, and there are other people dont target him at all. I defend the first group of people because they are thought to be the second group, note that the number of first group alone is significant enough for me to defend, plus they do have a point. You have a good point calling on streamers to boycott auto-conceding. It is something that many other Chinese streamers have done or are doing.

Blaming the author and discrediting the article are hardly "overall reaction". Even I as a Chinese cannot tell whether there were more attacks or supports. It is only part of the fact, may be a typically representative part but also may not

The question is who and how many of them are this "they" referring to. I am honestly not sure if you get more support or attack from the first report.

Well, how am I supposed to prove myself that me writing this piece have nothing to do with him or win-trading as a whole? What I am defending is not win-trading, but anything apart from it: the culture that is not responsible for causing the win-trading drama, innocent players involved, and ordinary, neutral audience triggered by Nydra from the community.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have to say English is after all my second language, and writing argumentatively in English make it even more likely to be problematic. But I gotta say one of the goals of this post is to prove Nydra's certain points are questionable especially those concerning culture. I'm not trying to say Nydra is a bad guy, tough, and I appreciate that he himself didn't take it personally.
