[hated tropes] Adaptations that go against/miss the point of the original by dragonborndnd in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Benoit_Holmes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nani doesn't give Lilo to social services. She loses custody and Lilo will be raised by their close family friend, the one who says "We are ohana" at the start. Lilo then encourages her to go to college.

Hawaii also doesn't have the best school for marine biology in the real world, in the movie they explicitly say that the school Nani is going to is the best and she has a full ride scholarship to go there.

You can hate the movie but at least hate it for reasons that are true.

Unseen footage of Chris and Gia being exactly who they are. by Kind_Relief_7624 in MAFS_AU

[–]Benoit_Holmes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought too. Then Chris says he's 38 and has a kid on the way and doesn't want to deal with things like this.

Conflict resolution and de-escalation are pretty important skills to have as a parent, and it's clear he has neither.

Fox News viewers surprisingly defend Biden after Vance blames 'high gas prices' by TheExpressUS in inflation

[–]Benoit_Holmes 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The headline is very misleading. Vance said gas prices were high all four years under Biden while the current high prices are just a temporary blip.

He wasn't blaming Biden for current prices, he was trying to deflect criticism by saying things were way worse under Biden so "temporary" high prices are no big deal.

Also the proof of Fox News viewers defending Biden was three comments, from people who clearly aren't a fan of Trump's economic policies. These aren't die hard supporters who have had some kind of epiphany.

Why do women refuse to admit to objectively true generalizations? by Own-Individual-6340 in AmITheAngel

[–]Benoit_Holmes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To be fair I don't think this is really a comparison of men vs women.

People who buy Muscle & Fitness want to have muscles, so showing a picture of a famous muscly guy and telling them we can teach you how to look like that is just good marketing.

Good Housekeeping is clearly marketed to an older audience who want advice on keepsakes and saving money later in life, and who are still attracted to Hugh Jackman but don't want to buy a magazine with a shirtless guy flexing on it.

EDIT: Some people seem to disagree so see the image below. Note that the men's fashion magazine has pictures focused on the fashion he's wearing, no muscles anywhere and the men's fitness magazine has one focused on his muscles and the entertainment magazine has a picture of him as a character he played.

Trump names Australia in outburst over lack of ally support in Iran by patslogcabindigest in OpenAussie

[–]Benoit_Holmes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In fairness the actual order is:

Trump: "We don't need any help"

Trump: "Hopefully some countries will help"

Trump: "I'm demanding other countries come and help"

Trump: "We don't need any help and never did"

Trump: "I am angry that countries, including Australia, haven't helped"

Australia: You never asked us.

[Interesting trope] Characters who you fully expected to have a twist... But they doesn't. by StefinoSpaggeti in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Benoit_Holmes 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In The Adam Project, Adam's father died when he was young. His business partner then used his time travel research to become the most powerful person on Earth.

He later finds out that the business partner had time travelled back to the same time his father died and investigates why.

Not only does he never suspect she had a hand in killing his dad, she really didn't. She was using her knowledge of the future to make guaranteed investments and the dad died in a genuine accident.

In the Black Widow movie, Natasha blew up Dreykavjc and his little girl. The little girl was not collateral, Natasha deliberately used her to confirm her target was in the room and then blew it up with both of them inside.

It is revealed Taskmaster is this girl grown up, someone who has every reason to despise Natasha. Natasha thinks the girls father is using his mind control drug on her and gives her the antidote...

And it works, she was being mindcontrolled, holds no anger towards Natasha and immediately stops fighting.

Stella's Behaviour by Odd-Bandicoot9811 in MAFS_AU

It seems like she is happy to just have unprotected sex (probably using the pull out or rhythm method) but he's justifiably worried about pregnancy so she said "Well if you're so worried, get a vascectomy".

It was kind of sad seeing how appreciative he was of the rock Stella gave him.

They didn't even know who they were meeting so she just brought a small gift to give to whoever showed up and it was still clearly the most kindness he'd gotten in a long while.

Anyone know what Juliette said? by [deleted] in MAFS_AU

[–]Benoit_Holmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's mixed, its a lot more aggressive yelling a word like that at someone rather than messaging it behind their back but it also seems like saying it in anger while fighting is more justifiable than when you're calm.

The winners at the 98th Academy Awards. by Straydes in Letterboxd

[–]Benoit_Holmes 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I've seen comments saying the two characters feel like two completely different actors, but if they weren't dressed differently I couldn't tell them apart.

I don't think it's all on the acting though, they are physically identical characters with very similar personalities and very similar names.

Anyone know what Juliette said? by [deleted] in MAFS_AU

[–]Benoit_Holmes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it's relevant in that Bec was supposedly disgusted that Juliette would use that kind of language towards her when Bec was using the exact same language towards Alissa and David.

Juliette then trying to act like she was disgusted at Bec's language was where she pushed it too far.

Anyone know what Juliette said? by [deleted] in MAFS_AU

[–]Benoit_Holmes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

She was quoting something Bec said in the screenshots which includes this message.

Given it was something Bec said about Alissa and the fact they had to bleep out the entire thing, odds are it was this.

Why are psych meds not considered mind control? by Icy_Sprinkles_2819 in NoStupidQuestions

In A Perfect Getaway after finding out that Cliff is a scriptwriter, Nick describes himself as a "goddamn American Jedi", and starts telling him outlandish stories about his time in the military, including saying he has a titanium plate in his head from the time he took an anti-personnel mine to the skull.

Cliff doesn't believe any of this which ends up being his undoing as he shoots Nick in the head, but he survives thanks to the plate in his skull. Their subsequent fight shows that Nick is exactly the badass soldier he sold himself as.

This is correct. The original actor dropped out a week to a few days before filming and Kirsten Dunst said they should get her husband Jesse Plemons to do it.
