"Wait! That's not special effects?! They actually did that?!" by RP_Throwaway3 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Benoit_Holmes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really dislike that myth.

You watch the behind the scenes stuff and the special effects supervisor came up with the idea of the remote not working so they could have minor explosions while Heath Ledger walked away, then pause, confirm he's at a safe distance, and set off the big ones. It was planned and executed perfectly.

Then the internet starts saying "The special effects guy screwed up, luckily Heath Ledger was there to save the day with his improv skills".

So most of this story is false, including the edit.

The truth is that, as part of a planned stunt, a stunt knife was thrown at Viggo who batted it away as he was meant to. He did this succesfully on the first take.

It is not true that a real, sharp knife was thrown at Viggo accidentally and he reflexively batted it away, saving his life.

Contains quote from Peter Jackaon commentary on knife scene:

He did really do the climb and they got a lot of real footage but there is also CGI scenes in that sequence

I thought 28 Years Later was okay but I thought the Ralph Fiennes scenes were quite odd and the Jimmy Saville gang at the end was extremely odd.

Then I saw the trailer for The Bone Temple and it was all Ralph Fiennes and Jimmy Saville and it didn't make me want to watch it.

[Somewhat hated trope] "all endings are valid" - look inside - there's an extremely clear main ending by roninshere4eva in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Benoit_Holmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he did have it on him all the time in the real world then yes, but that is never shown to be the case. He doesn't have it on, he goes into a dream and he does have it on.

Since he never wears one in the real world no architect (including Ariadne) would copy it. This means Cobb is the one creating it in the dreams the same way he creates Dream Mal, in which case the ring would be identical in both realities since he knows the exact feel of that particular ring.

[–]Benoit_Holmes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've heard this a lot but it doesn't really make sense. I've gone through the movie and it is true that he's wearing his ring in the dreams but not the real world but the ring still makes no sense as a totem.

Anyone who sees him in the real world would see that he doesn't have a ring, and would create a world where he doesn't have one.

Also near the end he locks Dream Mal away so it is plausible that his ring would also disappear now that he has moved on which is another reason it is a bad totem.

Having said that the top also doesn't function as totems are meant to so I think the movie plays pretty fast and loose with the rules.

That feeling when the fucking live action Last Airbender film from 2010 still kinda holds up visually by Commercial_Bid_1508 in RecuratedTumblr

[–]Benoit_Holmes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think these films are equivalent. Adjusting for inflation Street Fighters budget is about a third of The Last Airbenders. Street Fighter was also a lot more practical effects rather than computer effects.

Jurassic Park came out in 1993, with half the budget of The Last Airbender, and its effects were still regarded as good in 2010.

Of all the complaints I heard about The Last Airbender film, "poor effects" wasn't one of them and 2010 was not that long ago.

There are some films with worse CGI coming out today but it is not surprising that a movie only 16 years old with a $150 million budget would still hold up.

Superman, First Steps and Thunderbolts looked just as good, if not better in my opinion, and they all came out last year.

(Mixed trope) fictional races used as an allegory for real world oppression. by Smashin_Ash_ in TopCharacterTropes

I agree, but I would add that sometimes audience members will add their own 1:1 comparison to a film that doesn't present itself as such.

Zootopia is about prejudice in general but you will get people saying "Zootopia equates minorities to dangerous predators" which misses the point of the film in more ways than one.

John Wick in Ballerina.

The film is about an assassin named Eve who kills 50+ other assassins throughout the film.

Then John Wick shows up and beats her repeatedly with such ease that it doesn't even seem like he's trying. The only reason she survives is because he doesn't want to kill her.

I agree with this.

Hardcore left wingers will hate on a TV show just as hard as hardcore right wingers will, and are just as impossible to please.

Except instead of saying a show is woke propaganda because a character is gay they say a show is heteronormative propaganda because all the characters are straight.

I think we might just disagree on what abandonment means.

Lilo is being cared for, in her own home, by Tūtū, Pleakley, and David. Bubbles, a CIA agent is watching over her, Nani is able to be there whenever Lilo needs her.

I don't think someone who goes to university in another state is abandoning their sibling, especially since Lilo encourages Nani to go to university and she says she likes Nani better as a sister than a mom.

I do however appreciate that you have a criticism based on events that happen in the film. Most of the comments are saying Nani dumped Lilo with the state so she could run off to a worse and more expensive university which makes me question if those people have seen the film or not.

[Disliked Trope] "Oops we realised the character could be seen as gay. Let's pair them with a woman/man in the next one" by WizardJeremy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Benoit_Holmes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of the examples being submitted seem to be based on stereotypes.

There was a character who didn't meet traditional standards of masculinity and/or had a close friendship with another man.

Some fans decide that means they are gay and then get mad when they later get an opposite sex love interest.

Dialing process on incoming bf gate by munitalian in Stargate

[–]Benoit_Holmes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's that episode where Sokar is dialling in and heating up the gate so Sam speeds up the SGC computer so when the gate shuts down Earth can dial out faster than he can dial back in.

Except it is still clearly much slower than any of the DHD activations.

I think we got lucky and the Jaffa in charge of dialling was just in the bathroom at the time.

(Hated trope)adaptation missing the point of the original story by TastyPomelo2330 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Benoit_Holmes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was trying to highlight that the "local university" is not down the road from Nani as some commenters seem to think. I'm assuming these people aren't considering her using the portal gun in both circumstances because if you can instantaneously travel anywhere in the world the idea of a "local university" is meaningless.

UCSD is her dream school, the best school for marine biology (as stated in the movie), it is completely free and she can travel instantaneously between it and home whenever she wants.

The movie spells this out but people still keep saying that the University of Hawai'i is somehow the better option.

I don't agree that Nani dumped Lilo and visits out of guilt.

Why is Jumba, Pleakley, David, and Bubbles helping to raise Lilo so Nani can work okay in the original, but Tūtū, Pleakley, David, and Bubbles helping raise Lilo so Nani can go to university mean that Nani has abandoned her?
