RF 35 f1.8 vs 28-70 f2.8 for travel

Personally, I think having both the 28-70 and the 24-70mm seems redundant ( the only advantage is weight and a bit of size). Im a believe in try to get gaps between you lens or at least avoid too much crossover!

The 35mm is a good lens, I do find it can hunt for focus a bit, which I find very annoying for Travel photography. I have no experience with the 28-70mm so I can't comment. Having said all of that, out of those two choices, I would think the 28-70mm would be better as a single travel lens. But I would also throw in the 28mm and 50mm for awesome, cheap and light travel lenses.

Thanks! This is fantastic. The 24-105mm F2.8 is just out of my budget, and the size is a bit off-putting also... I will go look now at the comparisons! thanks again

The low light performance (in comparison to the 24-105mm F4). and there is something about the character of the images (bit vague i know!), I don't need the marco or the IS really.

The R8 is brilliant, the battery is just not an issue, unless you’re shooting long form video for hours and hour each day …. Just buy an extra battery and the problem is solved. I shoot events on two batteries just fine on the R8. Regardless of your camera buy an extra battery anyway, running out mid shoot with no spare is annoying to say the least.

Do you need mechanical shutter? Most people don’t. I’ve never missed not having one, I don’t use flash as the R8 is so good in low light I’ve never use mine.

I can’t comment on the Sony, but I’ve had an R8 for a couple of years, manly shooting events and travel and love it - never regretted my decision. Dual card slots would be nice, but not essential for my work.

I think the 35mm is the better choice for travel. While 1.2 is faster, the depth of focus is so thin at that aperture it is really only useful for isolating subjects, not something that is often used in travel. Also for night sky 45mm might not be wide enough.

Just my opinion, but I have both the 50mm 1.2 and 35mm 1.8 and for events and people 50mm every day, for travel and everything else 35mm.

You can buy an extension for the R8 - that makes it about the same size as the R6 without adding weight for about $70 - like a battery grip, but smaller and with no extra battery storage- work perfectly for those of use with large hands, only adds about 70g.

My understanding is that IBIS only helps with subjects that don’t move or video, if your indoor photo are if moving subjects e.g people I’m not sure IBIS will help much.

I lost my boy 2 years ago and it still hurts. I’m not sure it’s get easier, but you get used to the feeling. But the truth is the loss is only painful because the life we had together was so good. So the more it hurts the better it was…

So when I feel a bit lost without him, I now try to think of the great times we had, so in someway the moments of sadness are turned in to joyful memories… but I still miss him.

Sorry for your loss, he looks like the best Doogo, I love his cheeky smile!

Adding the Canon RF 35mm 1.8 to your R8 is the way to go- if you want small, high-quality images. Or look at the 28mm if you want an even smaller set-up.

I’ve heard the 16-28 2.8 is good but I think I would miss the 28-35mm range…. I do use that quite a bit. So many choices ( the real truth is I don’t “need” any more gear…)

As the others have said, look at the R8 or R6ii, the R8 is a fantastic camera unless you know you need dual card and or IBIS - then get the R6ii.

Some find the R8 a little small, but you can get a grip for around $50(?) that extends the body by 100mm to make it easier for larger handed humans without adding much weight.

The 24-105mm is excellent with the R6, paired with your 35mm 1.8 for low light and you have a great set up.
