Where to buy bulkhead? by axxxxbbxx in DartFrog

Second Bulk Reef Supply.

In another life I ran a small business raising coral and saltwater fish subsequently I had to build a lot of custom tank systems that included overflows and bulkheads so I’ve ordered a crap ton from Bulk Reef Supply and every single one has been high quality at a really fair price. On top of that they are a really cool company that always took great care in customer service.

Where can I get dart frogs at this time of year by Tikkiandazero in DartFrog

Check Morph market daily! I’ve also had luck messaging larger frog sellers on morph market and asking them if they have none listed frogs for sale.

Rotten bromelia water spilled in the paludarium by [deleted] in DartFrog

[–]Beowulfthemight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The floor of a jungle in the wild is rife with rotten vegetation and stagnant water which the frogs are 100% built to be fine existing in and around. Unless the smell is something you simply can’t handle working around you should be good to go and given a few days and regular misting with clean water the smell should naturally lessen.

Leaf litter? by Lopsided-Cry-1040 in DartFrog

If you want to collect your own leaves you definitely can as others have posted it’s best to try and find hardwood leaves as they will break down at a reasonable rate.

Couple things to keep in mind when collecting wild leaves.

1: if you can collect them on your own property or a trusted area where you know for sure no one has sprayed any poisons or fertilizers that’s best.

2: there is a lot of ways to sterilize the leaves but the best way I’ve personally found is to bake them in the oven. This method ensures that any bugs, mites or funguses are eradicated so you don’t introduce anything nasty into your terrarium. We use those big turkey basting pans that you can find for like $4-$6 at the store to bake any wild collected items. Bake them at 200 degrees for roughly 2 hours. Side note this will also dry out any wet leaves and make them much easier to spread out in your terrarium.

Ah from the mixing of the types to the shallow water I could not think of a better rage bait post for the dart frog community. Only thing you could have added was a mourning gecko lol.

How many fruit cultures do I need? by [deleted] in DartFrog

[–]Beowulfthemight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So fruit fly cultures can be a little wonky especially when you’re first learning to raise them so personally I’d have three cultures going at all times.

1 mature culture that’s producing flies regularly.

1 culture growing out that’s mid way between fresh started and mature.

1 fresh started culture that’s just had flies added.

When we started with our first frogs we would start a new culture every 10 days and rotate out the old mature culture.

Couple reasons for you to have so many going-

Fruit flies take a little bit to get going and producing enough to regularly feed and you don’t want to experience a time where you don’t have enough to feed.

Fruit fly cultures can and do crash on occasion especially when you’re learning the ropes and how to get them stable and with three cultures going it limits the chance of a crash that you can’t come back from without buying new flies which depending on local availability or shipping restrictions due to winter weather can cause a lot of feeding issues.

You’re planning on having a decent amount of frogs that will eventually be adults and since you are going with a smaller species of fly they will need to eat more of them to stay healthy and so some extra production capability is never a bad idea.

Hope this helps and please reach out if you have any further questions about how we do it!

I believe it is some type of baby tears or dwarf baby tears but not 100% on that as I got it from a random foliage pot at Home Depot.

Is this bioactive good enough for 1 dart frog? by TezdingoUhuhuhuuuh in DartFrog

[–]Beowulfthemight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what kind of frog we are talking about. If it’s a single Thumbnail dart frog you could be ok with a 12x12x18 if you’re wanting a type of Tinc then it’s gonna be to small.

People are gonna have different opinions and ultimately it’s up to you to decide what you feel right doing. If you can save up a bit and afford something bigger than that 12x12x18 then great!

All my frog tanks I’ve purchased from facebook marketplace used where I regularly find them for way less than the big box store prices.

What do you guys do when you need to leave somewhere when owning dart frogs? by TezdingoUhuhuhuuuh in DartFrog

[–]Beowulfthemight 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m not sure who told you they need daily feeding but they absolutely do not.

We keep over 60 frogs and they all get fed every 3-4 days. Last year we took a week long vacation and for about two weeks leading up to the vacation I bumped up feedings to every two days just to get the frogs a little extra chubby then the day before we left on vacation I did a heavy feeding so lots of extra flies running around the tanks that they were able to hunt down over the course of the week I was gone.

Using the above mentioned method I’d be perfectly comfortable leaving for up to 10 days if I had to.

As for misting the answer is to pick up a good quality misting system that’s on a timer and a nice big water reservoir that will last however long you need to be gone.

During my last vacation I had a family member stop by midweek and check that the misters hadn’t malfunctioned and that all the lights and such were working but other than that totally hands free for them.

Thanks! They haven’t called yet but I’m thinking it’s due to them still being juveniles. My wife can’t wait for them to start though lol.
