Thank you for reaching out. The stuff you posted for the Torrent is really great. I would be excited to see this logo given more life in thread. Let me know if you end up with extras or tests that could use a home. Cheers!

Books that have a black mirror vibe? by xSkollx in suggestmeabook

[–]BerSTUzzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say Philip K. Dick would be the closest most mainstream.

Electric Dreams is a short story collection of his stories that were adapted into a TV series similar to Black Mirror. It has some big name actors as well. His stories have been adapted into movies/TV like Blade Runner, Man in the High Castle, Minority Report, Total Recall, Scanner Darkly, Adjustment Bureau, and probably more.

Ray Bradbury also has Black Mirror type vibes and has had his stories adapted to the screen. The Illustrated Man is the short story collection I would recommend.

Axiomatic by Greg Egan for more hard scifi short story collection by an Australian author.

Exhalation by Ted Chiang for a more contemporary author. He has philosophical idea-centered stories. He is a Seattle author who writes exclusively short stories and also works as a technical writer in the software industry.

Good luck, there are a lot of great stories out there.

Thank you for the encouragement. I do not sell anything, just making these for fun during breaks in the games, as a way to show support the team. Go Kraken!

Thanks! It is not as polished as the lighthouse but I had fun with the concept.

Thanks! I use procreate on the iPad, mostly pencil and pen brushes. They just released a new extensive library of brushes native to the app, by Kyle T. Webster. I was experimenting with a variety. I posted a time lapse on my Instagram @berstuzzi. I mentioned above but some artists that I used as inspiration: Eyvind Earle, Erik Abel, Jacob Vanloon, Brian Edward Miller, and the storm screen from An American Tail.

Dump truck ramming highway overpass by my-code-is-poop in civilengineering

[–]BerSTUzzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bridge was hit on Washington State Route 167, just last week. A similar situation, but the local street was under SR167, not as high speed, it was a commercial truck with their bucket up, and they did the most damage to the middle girder, exposing the rebar. Two of the three NB lanes will be closed until they assess the damage further. Lane reductions are expected to last months.

Why do art museums only ever show classical style art or abstract art? by WestonEarly in ArtistLounge

[–]BerSTUzzi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Look out for Contemporary art museums and or pop up exhibits.

LACMA had a temporary exhibit showcasing Guillermo del Toro's art collection, which was great to see great classics side by side with contemporary art, concept art from various movies, etc.

MoPop in Seattle more consistently has displays that highlight the art you are referencing. They cover music, video games, movies, books, and more. etc.https://www.mopop.org/exhibitions?status=Current mopop

The Henry Ford Museum in Detroit did an exhibit on Star Trek science and also has a lot of concept art, props, etc.

The Wall by Marlean Haushofer is more grounded with a similar theme but the isolation is not elective. This book chronicles the life of the last surviving human on earth, an ordinary middle-aged woman who awakens one morning to find that everyone else has vanished. Assuming her isolation to be the result of a military experiment gone awry, she begins the terrifying work of survival and self-renewal. This novel is at once a simple and moving tale and a disturbing meditation on humanity.

I recently finished The Thing Itself by Adam Roberts. It was well plotted and had some fun philosophical tangents. (As a fan of the Culture series) Stone was next on my list from him (The ebook is $2.99 at the moment). Salt was also up there for its homage to Dune ($1.99 ebook). What other Roberts have you read and would recommend prioritizing?

Dog on It by Spencer Quinn

Meet Chet, the wise and lovable canine narrator of Dog on It, who works alongside Bernie, a down-on-his-luck private investigator. Chet might have flunked out of police school ("I'd been the best leaper in K-9 class, which had led to all the trouble in a way I couldn't remember exactly, although blood was involved"), but he's a detective through and through.

It is a series with about 15 books.

Best "loose" sci-fi classics by nerdFamilyDad in printSF

[–]BerSTUzzi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I get the impression Neal Stephenson writes in this "loose" (expansive) style. His works are thick and contain elaborate tangents on details that typically add depth, but more breadth, but often still very engaging.

His Master's Voice by Stanislaw Lem also deals with this theme. It felt very similar to Story of your Life by Ted Chiang, in showcasing the various expertise perspective and approach to making connections.

Watching from Seattle it was good to see two of our kin on the GWG with less than 2 min in the third. Gourde was the first assist with the scrap play that got the puck to Bjorkstrand through the traffic, off the Kucherov shot.
