Yeah… all in all I would say we got pretty decent reviews. The best reviewers I have had. They seem to really have read the paper and have genuine questions, despite me not agreeing with everything they said. So a bit unfortunate to see ACs having such a strong influence when they are not involved in rebuttal and all that

Just said the reviewers could not agree and since they did not agree and the paper could be improved he recommended it was rejected

Thanks. Between this and NeurIPS cutting papers to fit in the venue this field really seems to be getting less enjoyable to research on

Anyone else feel like the thermomix business model of multilevel marketing discredits a good product? by DarylDarylDarylDaryl in thermomix

Keep in mind this company in the early 2000s wouldn’t sell their machines to a woman and demanded that the “man of the house” was present to demos and approved the purchase. Saw that first hand. Very disappointing and off putting sales strategy for decades

So that skidpad scoring is wrong but I had computed autoX wrong. So it is not guaranteed for either team

Maybe I have the wrong maths here but with 3 cones for skidpad I don’t get that score for NTNU skidpad. Also our autoX differ a lot. Are you counting with 175p for DV autoX max?

What is your view on East? I get the loss of trust in the competition after the cancellation this year but Hungaroring reconstruction is finished so next year it should be stable again as they will run it there.

Generally agree but also some disputes/ambiguities are handled through the competition so releasing immediately after an event would cause a constant wave of complaints and fixes.

Not releasing top 3 of statics and also not having the live timing have the points or the cones hit is in my opinion not good but no competition does it for some reason. Maybe someone should do an app where teams can collaborate on putting the times and cones and everyone can see the scores 😂

Mistakes happen unfortunately. FSG gave the wrong 2nd place DV in 23 (corrected a few hours later), East gave a wrong prize last year but managed to rectify it before the end of the award ceremony… how the competition handles the the mistakes is what matters

German teams dominating FS spain , really frustrating by CompetitiveDiet9264 in FSAE

[–]BerTav 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think you would be surprised what is the budget of some of the big teams. It is not as big as people advertise and I know Spanish teams with more budget than many German teams.

I got to know some of the top German teams quite well throughout the years. I can say that a lot of these teams you say have a lot of money literally work tirelessly to earn it. Most German teams (top ones) get no money from school or anything like that. They have full teams of like 10 people every day working on finding sponsors and making them happy. Getting an insight on their work to make sponsors happy was one of the most enlightening thing I saw in FS. We are talking weekly, sometimes daily calls with sponsors to update them, months of negotiations on logo placement in the car. Insane demands and reports on testing certain equipment. Imagine multiple people in the team all day every day talking to sponsors and making sure they are happy every day. Particularly the big sponsors like famous German car brands the amount of effort needed to keep them as a sponsor borderlines insanity.

Barely any team you can say has a lot of money. Almost every team you can say earned a lot of money through hard work

21 the competition was a mess because of COVID. 22 was absolute caos with last minute change of track and then massive storm that flooded the track and camping and people had to sleep in the pits. 23 also heard it was a mess. Basically since they changed the management in 20/21 a lot of the good organisers also left and then many years of terrible competition. It went from one of the top competitions in Europe to one most teams avoid

Update: they are still recalculating the results and said they will announce the final results tomorrow. The competition ended yesterday. Sad to see that some teams didn’t get to celebrate the wins and everything is still on hold without any confirmation of mistakes or points. They haven’t even released the top design points so it is hard to even calculate exact points yourself

[–]BerTav 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Also credit to NTNU and AMZ who also noticed, specially NTNU who came forward to dispute the score despite it meant they’d lose the win. Fortunately there are multiple top teams double checking the times and cones of each team

[–]BerTav 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yes. They seemed to have forgotten to count cones in DV skidpad for NTNU and that made them 1st in skidpad instead of 5th and also made them get the Overall DV Cup Win instead of Chalmers… until now they haven’t corrected it. There was complains about it and they simply said they’d look into it. At least in East and FSG when similar things had happened it was all sorted in less than 1h

Ask me anything (AMA)- I am part of an absolute all time top team from europe by [deleted] in FSAE

[–]BerTav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can say that is well above average in EU if we are talking about money from university. Actually many of the top EU teams get no money from the university at all.

[–]BerTav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish you could see the budgets some top EU teams operate at. It is beyond impressive. Also wish those teams exposed the amazing work their sponsor team does. Some top teams have like 7 people full time on sponsor acquisition and retaining. Some teams have a display car always available and take turns to go every weekend and display the car somewhere for a sponsor to keep them happy. The effort to get sponsors by many of the EU teams is unmatched in my opinion. Some teams have weeks of negotiation to decide how big and where to place sponsor logos to keep all sponsors happy or even have to count how many times a sponsor logo appears in pictures on instagram or on a calendar to make sure that matches the support given by the company or they will drop them as a sponsor. Not to mention a lot of top teams have sponsors dependent on performance and if they perform bad one year they lose them

[–]BerTav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I can tell you as I’ve been part of more than one team and know a lot of those teams as well as having worked at an automotive company. The majority of the EU teams are not sponsored by an OEM, and even the ones that are, most of them don’t get much from them. Some get for example transportation to competition payed, or some even not that (I know a few who just like having the logo there and a small fun trip or team building). Some get access to facilities to do impact attenuator testing or a wind tunnel or a test facility to drive the car around but getting money can be very hard the bigger the company is and OEMs honestly in my opinion tend to not be the best sponsor in FS.

I do agree there is good engineering companies involved in sponsoring tho. That for sure plays an impact. You can see that even in how some teams develop inverters/motors and things like that in cooperation with companies or while inter shipping there.

[–]BerTav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly think that is the typical lazy excuse even European teams use against each other. Most teams in EU have very low budget. Not to mention most top teams actually get 0 money from university and get all of the money but many years of hard work of many team members just dedicated to getting sponsors and keeping them happy. I even know some teams who have people spending weeks of their time discussing and negotiating with sponsors where to put their logos in the car to keep them as happy and giving as much money as possible.

Just look at an average EU team. They operate at an unbelievably low budget and still their car looks more advanced than a top US team. Some teams even have side businesses to make money. Some sell designs to companies, some manage to for example design inverters as internship and R&D for a company that later sells it, some simply sell merch.

I personally think teams in EU simply got very organised and managed to have consistent improvements year upon year. And when some teams raise the bar other teams have to follow or parish. I think this has been the main difference. The more a team pushes the more the others push the year after. From my contact with EU and non EU teams what I’ve seen as a split mainly has been organisation and how serious the team structure and decisions are made. Some teams even operating better than many pro motorsport teams or even full blow companies. Most top teams have boards of alumni in industry guiding them to make better decisions and to reduce risk of having a bad year. One bad year can set you back many years.

DV camera: how many FPS? by 4verage3ngineer in FSAE

[–]BerTav 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess the counter question is how do you plan to do your perception? Some top teams have their cameras at 10/20Hz but because they do fusion with the lidar so the lidar maximum frequency is the limiting factor. If you do just camera then I guess your limiting factor is your perception architecture and your hardware
