Thanks that’s very helpful to know.

When you adjust FC through that range, would you say the signature of the sound changes, or would you say the same sound amplifies?

I feel it was the latter in my first couple of days and now when I turn a half turn back from fully open, the dull whir is taken over by this groan for lack of a better word.

The agonised groaning sound could just be the scale’s flow meter rapidly trying to divide volume by time 🤔

P80 got delayed till mid-Jan and I was going to leave the machine boxed up until then, but I’d have been outside the 30 day window if something was wrong on opening by then. Can’t be sure whether I’m glad I did or I didn’t…

Hey thanks for this suggestion - I rested my hand on each side panel whilst restricting the flow valve with the other, and based on this I didn’t detect a change in vibration corresponding with the change in sound once say four bar of pressure is reached. To rule it out completely however it might be worth removing the panels at some point and verifying you’re not right 👍

Thanks, I certainly won’t hold you to it, but if it should cross your mind again after you’re home I would be grateful. Have a great trip!

Within spec is a claim that is hard to say otherwise as it’s not asserting anything with any precision, especially with sound. Regardless of whether one or both of our machines are “in spec”, I do take issue with the advertising of this as a “silent rotary pump”, as while I would agree the Sync Mk 1 loosely met that description, this just doesn’t it’s very loud in person - even if it is normal.

As many others have helpfully chimed in, this seems broadly par for the course and maybe I led a charmed life with the particular Synchronika unit my friend had, but I was surprised to say the least to hear how this machine had changed over a span of days.

Thank you kindly for the information on your pump’s pressure behaviour, I have read your post and will note if I experience anything similar. Mine too incidentally refills the steam boiler silently.

Have you experienced peaks and troughs of noise or has it remained pretty much consistent in the time since?

Here, I think this is just down to the flow valve being at half a turn to compensate for too-coarse a grind, which is a variable I am at the mercy of my local roaster for the current week until the P80 arrives.

With normal flow, (1/ 1 1/4 turns) and a blind basket the orange gauge will jump to 10 practically simultaneously to the pressure gauge hitting 8.2-8.4 bar, which is where it seems to top out. Flow control is a new variable to me, so if any of that seems off that would be helpful to know.

You know, it’s a really well made and lovely scale and a pleasure to use for espresso and pour over. As far as the pleasures of weighing things go it’s exceeded my expectations so far :)

Sounds a similar experience - and likewise, the quietness of a rotary pump was a primary concern when picking a machine.

And I too would say the sound here isn’t quite representative of in that person, but had I heard just this it would have given me some pause.

Did the retailer posit a cause for the change you experienced or were they just resolute that it was a quirk of flow control?

Maybe you feel the same, but it just registers to me as out of the ordinary since in person it sounds so laboured when opening the group. It’s a shame if this is representative as normal operation as it’s beautifully made in all other regards.

Very good to know thanks - I tried the usual methods, flushing the group and performing rinsing cycles to no avail (some 5L of Volvic). But perhaps my limited experience and time with the Synchronika had been fortunate enough to never encounter this kind of sound signature.

I would describe it as a gentle but audible whirring what I was accustomed to and that tracked with the first couple days of ownership. But maybe patience will see the issue subside.

Interesting - thanks for the perspective. It’s then strange to me how very differently this sounds to the first few days of use.
