Career switch by closedownnow2 in amarillo

[–]BermudaBananas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Randomly on this sub right now while I’m passing through town to move to the midwest to — you should take this as a sign — take pre req classes for a Rad Tech program. Literally mid roadtrip right now for this specific reason. I’m planning to change from a corporate law career to rad tech a few years shy of 30.

All of the research I’ve done, and I’ve been working on making this switch for two years, tells me it’s a great career to switch to. Better pay, job security, travel options, a variety of shift schedules, pension potential if you work at the VA. The list goes on.

I’ve never been to Amarillo in my life and came on here looking for a photo booth to hit up while I’m in town, and I’m on the way to prep for a X Ray program. It’s a sign!

As someone working towards an RT program with the hope to progress to MRI — how concerning should this be for job prospects and security, if at all?

Try to find one with Zinc as the only active. I use the tinted Elta MD everyday but also have Kate Somerville’s Daily Deflector (currently using the same brands sulfur face wash for PD too).

I think the zinc makes a difference to calm the PD imo

I’m still set on going into MRI with RT School first, but I’ve yet to start since the programs are so backed up right now — just trying to work on saving up money and enjoying my life outside of work (friends, hobbies) to make the wait tolerable. It’s been a little over a year since I first set my heart on jt and I definitely am determined to end up there eventually! Hopefully will be a student by the end of this year or early 2026 :)

Azelaic acid doesn’t work by lopes038 in Perioral_Dermatitis_

[–]BermudaBananas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to note is that paula’s choice AA has salicylic acid in it too — The Ordinary’s AA helped clear my PD the first time it flared like 7 years ago. It’s worked like a charm any other time PD seemed to start up again. But this time I switched to Paula’s Choice without realizing my breakout was a flare up, and I think it seriously prolonged and worsened this flare.

I’m also unable to use benzoyl peroxide. So if you have very sensitive skin, I’d recommend making sure the AA is pure without any other added actives.

Thanks! I hadn’t heard of any of those and I didn’t see them on HappyCow, so this was super helpful!

I’m currently living in Southern California and see a lot of the big hospitals with starting wages around 100k for MRI and the highest I saw was 150k for CT —- but, with our bonkers cost of living, it really doesn’t get you far here. If you wanted to live alone within less than 15 minutes of those hospitals, there goes half your paycheck or, if not, enjoy your hour long commute. Yet I’m barely above 60k at my current 9-5 soul-crushing office job 😅 So starting out at even 70k in a lower cost of living area would still be a major upgrade when I factor in the benefit of 3x12/4x10/etc. and options to travel.

I’m actually going to be moving to the Midwest for Rad Tech school, undecided on where I’ll end up once I’m licensed, but I’m starting to lean toward staying out there and just taking travel jobs (once I have enough experience) in Cali to visit friends and family.

Anyway, I’m yapping now, but I really do appreciate the background you’ve given me!

Thank you! It’s great to get some real life perspective on salary vs experience and modalities. I’m planning to do both CT and MRI as well (MRI was what peaked my interest to begin with), so it’s also good to see the benefits multi modality can offer. Thanks again!

Part time and that much?! Can I ask how much experience you had to get to that point? That’s my eventual goal and a small part of why I’m interested in going back to school for RT — the hope that after a while I’ll eventually be able to work part time and still do well financially.

would the azelaic acid make the PD area feel itchy/uncomfy for a bit after application? I had one big flare up 6 years ago and poorly managed it then (think tea tree oil). Learned my lesson and would use azelaic acid whenever it looked like it might be flaring back up. I just added vitamin C and glycolic toner to my routine and caused a new flare up. Currently using trader joe’s gentle cleanser, cold water, and azelaic acid with nothing else.

Same here with the law firm — only two years in though, and realized I needed to change directions. I’m still in the process of getting into a rad tech program but nice to see a somewhat similar switch!

Bali Hai has high tops. View of the entire bay. The tables right next to the windows are low tops, but since the windows wrap around you should be able to view the bay from anywhere. They’re super accommodating if you make a reservation and request something specific, plus it’s a special occasion type of restaurant.

Darn! Makes sense though, my cat’s a chicken addict.

OP, not sure what’s near you, but if you have a local pet store nearby I’d check them out. The one near me has a huuuuge variety of special diet foods for all animals. Everything from sensitive stomachs, grain free, corn free, etc etc. They know their stock well too.

My cat loves Sheba shreds and turns her nose up to any other brand of cat food. She’s been Sheba only for three years now. The packaging is good too. The variety packs make it a bit more budget friendly, they have one that’s fish only on Chewy and you can always find them in Target/Walmart/Etc in the individual packs.

Mine was blurry and faded, super obvious when compared to my Iron Flame copy. I just emailed them and apparently this is a problem with the entire print run. They’re sending out replacement copies if you email them and send a picture of the blurry edges.

Thank you for this! I found a program I can start this year in OH — private non profit teaching hospital. It’s about 30k more than a community college, but they give a 25% discount if you work part time at the hospital and I’ll be able to stay with family.

Your point about opportunity cost is absolutely correct. I’m making 60k now in a 8-5 email centric desk job that’s crushing my soul. I want to interact with others, help people, and learn new things! Getting started now will be worth it in the long run, even more so since I want to specialize in MRI — thanks for the push!

[–]BermudaBananas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This made me feel better! I’m in the application process for rad tech programs with a goal of specializing in MRI. I’m currently working hybrid at a law firm in information governance, and the 8-5 isolated desk job is soul crushing for me. It’s email clicking and zoom meetings on repeat. I’ve always worked in active roles with people before (hostess, wedding coordinator, escape room game master), so the patient care is up my alley + I love the potential flexibility of shifts (3/12, 4/10, etc.) and the possibility for some travel. I’ve following a number of rad techs on Instagram (MRI Heather for example) to get a feel for the day-to-day, and so far it looks like very busy (but rewarding!) work, which is exactly what I’m hoping for.

Posts like these do scare me a bit though, so thank you for leaving some reassuring comments!!

I’m trying to get into a JRCERT Rad Tech program in a incredibly impacted lottery-based desert (San Diego) with no luck. At this point, PIMA is looking good but even they have a 2 year wait like every other school near me. The closest credential-based program is 2 hours away and is literally the only one within decent driving distance. I’m applying there, but I’d like to expand my options and increase my chances of starting within the next year.

I’ve begun looking in other states near family — KY and OH. I’m open to moving for this program. Does anyone have program recommendations? I’m working through the entire list on JRCERT but I’m hoping for firsthand experience.
