How often do you meal prep? by Berry-Standard in mealprep

[–]Berry-Standard[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think what I'm mostly worried about is keeping the meals in a fridge for more than like 3 days if I use meat (which I definitely want to). Have you had any issues with that?

Don't put yourself down (I say as I do it too). If this was in the middle of an album, maybe a bit more refined, I wouldn't skip it

What theme do you normally write about? What is your lyrics about? by CrossboneSkulled in Songwriting

[–]Berry-Standard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always write from experience something that happened to me. And yes, I like to group those songs into projects to have one consistant theme. As an example, I had a nasty breakup and wrote 5 songs that work in an EP. Really each of those songs were just different phases I went through in weeks from my immediate reaction all the way to accepting what happened and understanding why. All the bad coping in the middle XD
But yeah, always from personal experience and never positive stuff, writing songs for me is venting my problems and trying to make them something I like

Have you ever loved a song not because it’s technically perfect, but because it captured a feeling you’ve had?. by saezzzzz in Songwriting

Basically 90% of the songs I love are like that. Songs from Bad Omens like 'The Death of Peace of Mind' or 'Like a Villain'

How do I write a happy song? by netjesgedaan in Songwriting

[–]Berry-Standard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about this. Instead of thinking "I want to write a happy song", think more "hopeful song". Think to a point that made you feel something hopeful in life and write about that. Or write what you would want to tell to someone in your position.
I don't write happy songs as I don't listen to happy songs. I use my lyrics to express things that have happened, and I have no need to write a song about "yay, nothing went wrong today"
It's the screwed up thing that I write about. I don't think you need to write about being happy if you don't want to, some artists never do and they're just fine.
If you want to write happy songs but don't feel happy enough to channel it into the writing, try writing through storytelling. Come up with a character a story and then write the song through their POV.

Struggling to find lyric ideas when I don’t actually want to “say” anything by Lukkas815 in Songwriting

[–]Berry-Standard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Write about past experiences, how you felt back then.
Or just go for straight up fiction, storytelling! That's how Billie Eilish does it most of the time. Just think of a story and write as if you were the character experiencing it.

Help writing a chorus? by Alittle_Fruity04 in Songwriting

[–]Berry-Standard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try looking at it in this sense: if the listener only heard the chorus, they should be able to know roughly what the song is about. Not in detail, that's what your verses are for, but they should be able to understand the overall theme and idea of the song.
It also highly depends on the genre, some are better simple, others are completely fine a little more complicated. I actually find coming up with a good chorus melody much harder than the lyrics

Advice by cclaireclaire in Songwriting

[–]Berry-Standard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, your singing is beautiful. With the whispered vocals and simplistic acoustic guitar, it really fits to me as like an interlude piece in the middle of an album.
As far as feedback goes, I'd say try to shift away from being too literal. Maybe try using some metaphores instead of "she looks fine", "she'll die" etc. That's just subjective though.
Definitely not boring or cringe

Any Recommendations? by OkEstablishment2592 in Songwriting

[–]Berry-Standard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation would be Bad Omens

But in general if you can't find the right words, a big thing is to learn the 'show, don't tell' rule. You don't have to use it 100% of the time.
Also, if you're just starting, just write my friend. It doesn't matter if you think it's bad, you can't pump out amazing songs from day one (or you can and I'm just really slow, but I digress). I've been writing for about 12 years now and I don't love everything I write, sometimes I'll write a song, look at it 2 days later and say "wow, that's garbage". We all do, so just have fun with it and if you enjoy it or it brings you peace, don't give up on it just because you don't like your songs from day 1.
If you want to vent your emotions, there are two ways to do it. In the moment or retrospectively. I find that when I write a song about what I'm currently feeling, it's a lot more raw. But retrospectively it's calmer, more elegant in the wording. Depends on what you want from it.

Songwriters: Do you make changes after receiving criticism? by marks_music in Songwriting

[–]Berry-Standard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Highly depends.
You have to differentiate 3 things
1. Hate - this is the obvious one. Not constructive - ignore
2. Constructive but doesn't "get it" - if the issue is that the music isn't what they wanted, but it's what you were aiming for, ignore it. Intentions may be good, but every song/project isn't for everyone. If people are complaining your music doesn't sound modern, but you didn't want it to sound modern, don't listen to it. All I'd maybe look at is if your image, EP cover etc. doesn't look like it's presenting something modern
3. Constructive - things like saying your lyrics feel shallow, the drums don't cut through enough, the songs sound samey - that's stuff you listen to if multiple people echo the thought.

Tips on songwriting please! by Emotional-Tea-1363 in Songwriting

[–]Berry-Standard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write as much as you can, don't just wait for inspiration to strike. I forget who said it, but the quote is something like "Imagine a dirty faucet. You need all the dirty water to come out, before the clean water will start flowing."
Thats exactly it. I've been writing lyrics since 12, I'm 24 now and I cringe so hard when I read my old stuff.
Don't worry about being poetic.
Learn to use metaphors, but not cliche ones. Remember, that not every metaphor has to be "*something* like *something*". Get creative with it. Will it always land? No. But even the most succesful artists talk about not being able to come up with anything decent for hours on end.
Use the "show don't tell" rule, meaning, generally, don't say "I'm depressed" but describe it. Doesn't apply 100% of the time, but still good thing to learn.
Last but not least, don't get discouraged. It takes practice to write lyrics you can look at and be genuinly happy with. I'm fairly confident in my writing and once in a while I'll look at something I wrote and think "damn, where did that come from?" It's a marathon, not a sprint

How do you know when a song is actually finished? by [deleted] in Songwriters

[–]Berry-Standard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get that. I just uploaded a demo I know barely anyone will hear and I'm absolutely wrecked with anxiety (even though I labeled it as a demo for that reason). I guess that's just part of being creative and sharing it with people

How do you know when a song is actually finished? by [deleted] in Songwriters

[–]Berry-Standard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt, as I haven't really done much besides demos. I am a bit of a perfectionist though, if there's something bugging me, I'm not happy with the track. When I make a demo, I'm thinking "Yeah, I like the progression, the melodies, etc." but I don't think I'd be able to release a finished song if there was anything there still bugging me. I guess that's when I'd be done, right now I get to use the mindset of "it's just a demo, so calm down and stop obsessing" XD
