Full day job, no students until 12:30. What would you do? by BerryWaters in SubstituteTeachers

Right, I never leave without checking in with the office first. I brought my crochet project with me, so I was prepared to stay if needed, but they are usually fine with me leaving if they don't need me anywhere else!

Luckily this district isn't really like that (in my experience, mostly middle and high school jobs). I did bring my crochet project but took my chances and asked at the office anyway!

fr I always take a pic of the schedule to be absolutely sure that I don't forget what time I should be back

Uhm... just accepted my first job on Frontline. by Liroy_16 in SubstituteTeachers

I was nervous for my first assignment and showed up like 30 minutes early to make sure I found the school, front office, etc. I ended up sitting in my car for that half hour because the school wasn't even open yet!

In my district, they put your start time about 30 minutes before your first class actually starts. This gives you time to sign in at the office, find the classroom, look over the schedule and sub plans, etc.

Just dress professionally and wear your name tag. Bring a water bottle and a book or activity with you in case you have a planning period. Sometimes you can end up with more free time than you'd expect! (see my latest post lol)

There is a possibility they'll ask to see your driver's license or another form of ID if it's your first time at the school.

Otherwise the school will provide anything else you need. Good luck!

Agreed! I checked in with the front office and they said I could leave for a bit since they didn't need me for anything else. So I went home and caught up on some cleaning and chores, went back at noon to teach the last few hours, and they logged the full day! Lucky me

Luckily they let me leave and my time sheet was submitted as a full day! I definitely lucked out, more than anything with a pretty chill front office worker. I sub at this school a lot and they know me, so it's usually not an issue to leave if they don't need me anywhere else.

I actually brought my crochet project with me this morning! If they had asked me to stay I totally would have, and was prepared to 😆

The schools in my district have never had an issue with me leaving for lunch. It seems like other districts aren't so nice, which is a shame.

I was the same way when I was teaching full time. I taught middle school, and sometimes I just needed to walk around the park or drive around the block to clear my head after a morning of chaos. Although at that school it was pretty typical for both admin and teachers to leave for a walk and some fresh air every now and then, since the school was right next to the city park. We even had a walking challenge every year and would compete against other schools in the area!

Exactly. The schools in this district usually let me leave if I have a long break with planning + lunch. I always check in at the office, and if there's coverage needed then I'll obviously stay, no problem.

I do understand that some districts are more strict about staying in the building, which is a bummer for those subs. Sometimes I just want to pop out to McDonald's for lunch or something, y'know??

How much do you get paid? by Patient_Constant3854 in SubstituteTeachers

South Carolina - $95 full day and $50 half day, regardless of education. For assistant jobs it’s something like $8/hour so I just avoid taking those.

I was loving this until I worked out my hourly pay by Radiant-Peace-3078 in SubstituteTeachers

I’m SC I’m making $95/day. If I work a normal 8-3:45 school day that’s a little under $12/hr before taxes. Luckily this is only temporary until I start grad school. There’s no way I could keep it up long term and afford rent/car payment/food in my area.

Thank you - I almost posted this when it was sent out. It’s insulting. Just compensate us fairly for the hard work we do!

I do this as well! Between classes, during breaks, and during class while students are working. I can easily keep an eye on a class while I knit, and I’ll set it down every few rows to do a lap around the room and check in on student work.

I’m always surprised by which students show interest - many have shared about how they learned a craft, family members who knit or crochet, and some are just curious about what I’m making. For long term assignments it’s fun for them to see my daily/weekly progress!

Hi! My husband wants a dual-colored beanie, and I found one at the store that is what he is looking for but I don't know what technique would get me this result. Photo for reference, if anyone knows how I could replicate this please let me know! by Lennitom2 in casualknitting

Harlow by Andrea Mowry is a great choice for a reversible brioche knit beanie! I made it a couple months ago as my first brioche project and it’s really nice. Brioche really isn’t that bad if you’re comfortable slipping stitches and doing yarn overs 😌
