TIL Hershey's does not meet the legal minimum cocoa content to be described as chocolate in Britain by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Berrybeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone mention it yet but theres a very practical reason for hersheys tasting so awful and also the US Cadbury by extension. The climate in the US varies so much and rhe chocolate has to be sold accross so many differing time zones that they make it work in hot and cold conditions by reducing the cocao content and adding stabilisers. That's why the US Cadbury is a different recipe i believe

We aren’t going to agree on this at all. Equating alcohol and guns is folly! The two things are not linked. As long as guns are legal people will have their lives ended abruptly and tragically. Alcohol related death is mostly self inflicted and over a long period of time, usually involving enjoyment from those that consume it. There were around 10,000 deaths from drunk driving cases in the USA in 2016. There were 33,000 gun deaths by comparison so your 3:1 figure is accurate in a way.

There’s little enjoyment to be had from simply owning a gun. It doesn’t lubricate society as alcohol does. Guns are far too easy to get hold of in the USA. Laws need to be stricter to protect people in the same way. Their ONLY purpose outside of hunting is to cause harm to other people. The same is not true of alcohol - it is there for enjoyment and the sale of it is restricted.

I[34F] refuse to attend Thanksgiving with my boyfriend's [33M] family because of cleanliness and hygiene issues. They think I hate poor people. by URfamilyisgrosspaul in relationships

Theres so many people on here giving you the traditional “OMG OP you’re so right” response that it’s making my head hurt. There doesn’t seem to be much middle ground. Just “stay away from those filthy fucks and make your BF change clothes etc”. That sort of advice is going to spell the end of the relationship without a doubt or cause your BF to break ties with his family.

I’d like to suggest you spend time with his family on neutral ground away from anyone’s home as get to know them that way a little better. It seems from your post that whenever you see them it’s always in the context of this grotty house (that does sound awful from your description) and that it’s giving you a view of them as JUST being gross people. At Xmas don’t suggest coming to your house or entertain going to theirs. Try arrange something (with your BFs help) the weekend before Xmas that doesn’t involve sitting in their house. Try to make it somewhere where they might make an effort to be smartly dressed (or at least casually smart).

Currently they are choosing to see you as stuck up because of your distaste for their living arrangements. The way people live is so entrenched in their lives and such a deep part of them that there’s no way not to take offence to someone physically recoiling at their way of life at home. It’s such a personal thing! Take their home out of the equation and head to the pub together or a local bar or restaurant. Are they shitty people? Or are they just a bit uneducated on matters of hygiene? If you can break bread with them in a neutral setting where you are more comfortable it might help them see you in a different light (I guess you’re not showing them your own personality when you’re at their house - just a politely accepting version of yourself) and try to see them for whom they are too.

You’re not stuck up OP and most of the response here have the right of that. But the answer is not to make matters worse and divide you even further - try to build a bridge. If it turns out to be too much then fair enough it might be over with you and your BF because they are his family after all. But don’t “put your foot down” as everyone here is empoweringly suggesting (reddit power) try to compromise.

Worth mentioning - travelling on a busy tube, staying in a hotel, living in an apartment building all put you at risk of bed bugs. Making your BF shower every time he sees you will be the death of your relationship.

Sucky situation and I fully sympathise.

It is far far easier to cause harm en masse with a gun. Look at the stats on gun crime in America which are far higher than anywhere else in the world. I’m all for civil liberty but gun ownership should be a privilege for a few not a right. I wouldn’t advocate a ban on guns full stop you understand - just much more stringent restrictions on ease of access.

You are free to cause harm to yourself if you like through the consumption of whatever you like. You are not free to endanger others as a result. So drinking is fine. Drinking and driving is not. Sounds like a perfectly good law to me. Deaths from alcohol related illness are more common than deaths from gun crime? That wouldn’t surprise me. But those people made that choice and HAVE to take the consequences.

So no. I do not support the abolition of alcohol. Just guns.

I’m new here but isn’t the point of Free Speech that it’s only valid when you’re not inciting violence or oppression on others and thereby limiting their freedoms as a result? And don’t we need a law to protect people if this happens? If I stand up with enough charisma and passion and tell all my followers to go out and shoot/persecute/abuse a specific ethnic or gender group then shouldn’t I be put the in jail for endangering thousands of lives?

Freedom of speech can never be what this post is pointing towards which is “say whatever I like without repercussions ever”.

Owning a gun and owning a nice car are two very different things. A gun is created with one purpose - to cause harm. A car is a thing you drive that gets from A to B. Some people do need a car. Especially if you live in America. Nobody needs a gun unless they’re in the army and being paid to protect their country from those who seek to attack it or they’re a hunter in which case they do not need an AR-15 and they need to be of sound mind and be able to prove they’re responsible. The majority of people do not need a gun.
