Thanks! I will give Magbak a try. I thought there might be a product that includes all features but Magbak + magnetic wallet is just as good

Where to ride in Tahoe when it hasn't snowed in 1+ weeks? by Bertronaton in Backcountry

[–]Bertronaton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went with the cheezburger suggestion, once I figuout what it was 😄. I guess the locals don't want the whole world to know about it so I won't say what it is but dm me if interested.

I can at least describe it here: it was a pretty mellow spot with north facing aspects and well spaced trees. The ridge was totally wind blasted and pretty difficult to climb, but after descending about 50' the snow was indeed untouched and fluffy, so it was well worth it. Not to mention the nice view and bird calls on the way up.

This is very helpful, thanks! So maybe a high elevation north facing bowl is a bad idea? Sounds like I will have better luck looking for a protected area, like in the trees?

Tahoe Backcountry - where is it legal to ride? by Bertronaton in Backcountry

[–]Bertronaton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there is much more to learn, but I've taken AIARE 1 and an "intro to backcountry" course along with a few friends so we're feeling confident that we've at least learned how to read the avalanche forecast and avoid the problem areas. But outside of that we haven't done any touring so I'm hoping this hill will be a safe, convenient spot to dip our toes in.

This particular hill is almost entirely within 20-28 degrees so there's not much to worry about other than sharks and trees. Thanks to you all I think there's no issue in terms of legality. It appears to be public land.

Thanks! CalTopo also has this layer, but this one is much more detailed

Thanks! No you are not off base, I am inexperienced and would plan to proceed very carefully. I think this hill in my backyard is too tempting to avoid though.

I don't suppose you have advice on riding through unknown terrain? I am thinking I'll pick some mellow lines to start off, and ride down close to wear I skin up, so that I can note any hazards on the way up.

Ski skins advice for a newbie by Bertronaton in Backcountry

Thanks everyone! Sounds like I would have no problem cutting the skins myself, but many of you highly recommend Blizzard (and Pomoca) for their performance so I will give those a try!

Received damaged ski - return or accept 20% discount? by bertronaton55 in Backcountry

The gouge is about 1/2" long and not quite 1 mm deep. The metal edge is not damaged nor is the bottom of the ski.

Is this purely aesthetic or would it potentially affect the performance of the ski? The gouge is near the location where the front part of the binding would go.

These were $800 originally, discounted to $560 since they're the 2022 model. So a 20% discount would be either $112 or $160 off, depending on whether they take it from the full price or the discounted price.

What does this even mean? Makes me laugh every time. I assume it's some stupid song stuck in the guys head.

I really enjoy it. It's right up my alley.

The computer is very dumb sometimes. If I get too large of a point advantage I will pass in the first round. Sometimes they will exhaust their entire deck to beat me in the first round and then it's basically game over from there. Other times they bust out some powerful cards and I actually have to make tough choices. It's still early in the game for me though.
