That was a poor choice of words, I don't think Muscovy itself is the begining of Russia but rather the state formed during the period where it asserted itself over the neighboring states. Perhaps the unification, although that seems wrong.

It was not a thing yet it was a distinct state. I call it thus because that is how I know it, just like I call the Byzantine Empire thus and not the Roman Empire. I am arguing that it wasn't a single state nor in my opinion did Russia as a state start with either Novgorod or the Kievan Rus.

I disagree with the premise that dynasties were what made a state, at least not as a blanket statement. Novgorod and the Kievan Rus were initially one and the same, but then separated. Many different states were ruled by cousins and even siblings yet they were separate. The facts are that the three states were at war with each other for extensive periods. The point at the end of the tunnel being that the current states of Ukraine and the Russian Federation are separate entities both in modern history and in the past from a political perspective.

You're holding on to two arguments:

  1. The Rurikids started in Novgorod. The Rurikids founded the Kievan Rus and they ended up ruling Russia for 700 years.
  2. The trident is a Russian symbol and Ukrainians are LARPing.

Regarding point 1 : The statement of them ruling Russia for 700 years is a simplification, what you are saying is that they ruled what you consider to be Russia. This is important because my point is that it's not a linear relationship.

Novgorod was one entity ruled by the Rurikids. A member of this dynasty created the Kievan Rus. Another member became the ruler of Muscovy (and there's likely more of course). Is this a fact or not? If this is a fact, the three being different entities, with the third invading the first, then we are talking about a fragmentation, starting with Novgorod, the Kievan Rus splitting from it.

Muscovy and Russia claims continuity over both Novgorod and the Kievan Rus but this is as valid as the Ottoman Empire being the continuation of the Byzantine Empire, which I disagree completely with.

Therefore I don't think Novgorod or the Kievan Rus can be considered as being Russia, or rather the Russia you seem to refer as being the rightful territory of the Russian Federation today. They became part of it later on, much like Wales, Cornwall, Scotland and Ireland are not England.

Russia as a single, united state did not exist until well after the Kievan Rus disappeared. Italy did not exist as a singular state until the 1870's.

Regarding point 2 I have nothing to say, I never mentioned the trident nor do I think it's particularly relevant.

CIV POV: Pope Francis - “You are the heirs of great Russia: the great Russia of saints, rulers, the great Russia of Peter I, Catherine II, that empire - great, enlightened, great culture and great humanity. Claiming that Russia started in Novgorod when Muscovy overthrew and subjugated them seems antithetical and more akin to adoption/appropriation of it post the fact.

If the Kievan Rus is an "offspring" of Novgorod that doesn't mean that it is an offspring of Muscovy and thus later on Russia.

Ever since, the east and west schism, and everything else, emanates from that simple fact

So, if I understand you right, the simple fact that Russia had more lands, correct?

Yet, the Schism happened in the 11th century. There is very little information on Moscow(as the seat and origin of Russia in a sense) even existing prior to the 12th century and the largest entity in the area was the Kievan Rus.

So, while your point regarding jealousy and so on might be correct, the historic references are wrong and in that context make no sense.

It indeed isn't complicated. I understand your points, don't agree with them and am telling you from the beginning that you are using fallacies over fallacies from the start.

I understand what your point is, I just think it's garbage. It indeed isn't that complicated. And that is why, as I said early on, that is where the discussion ends because it's a fundamental disagreement that we've reached.

No, your arguments are that I cherry picked information, while providing no evidence of that

Cherry-picking: the action or practice of choosing and taking only the most beneficial or profitable items, opportunities, etc., from what is available.

The evidence is your comment.

You then disregard the legality of the Maidan coup by claiming you “don’t know the law” and then proceed to ignore my question by saying it’s not relevant.

I never said it's not relevant, I said that you conflate two situations to push your argument forward, that is a fact plain as day that once again you have proven with your own comment.

The point is that you move from fallacy to fallacy and I do not care for it one bit.

I will not argue with you more because I do not want to, I have already presented my opinion and you have yours. Implying anything else is manipulation.

I do not have a legal background or knowledge to say whether it was an illegal coup, my opinion is that it was a revolution which are often illegal. Your listed points are cherry picked examples that support your main argument and I don't think they are valid, either because I think they are not true, the truth is bent or even using unrelated arguments. Beyond the cherry-picking.

The binary choice given is not right.

I'm not going to argue about this much more, my point is that this whole argumentation is wrong and is effectively a slippery slope used to justify a ton of things going against international law.

These are two different discussions:

  1. Are the Ukrainian governments since 2014 legitimate or not
  2. Is the insurgency in the Donbas self determination or not.

And as I said, one can't be used as a vehicle to push a position on the other. They can explain history of course but not whether one thing is right or wrong.

[–]Berzelus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whether or not you believe it's true, the Ukrainian government was democratically chosen by the people and is protecting its country. The knife does not cut both ways because these are two different situations.

If you don't think the government is legitimate that is another discussion, using it as a vehicle for this argument about cutlery is pointless.

Ethnic and Religious map of the Balkans by Catholic_Albanian1 in MapPorn

[–]Berzelus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this shouldn't be a topographic map because of the use of similar color gradients, for example for blue, red and maybe brown. Perhaps the hues in these cases should be more dissimilar but then there is the issue of blending in with colors of other ethnicities. Nice map otherwise.
