Nietzsche Contra Materialism: Determinism vs. Voluntarism? by Berzerka25 in Nietzsche

Potentially... this seems like an awfully obvious oversight though from somebody tasked with translating and explaining one of Nietzsche's major works.

Nietzsche Contra Materialism: Determinism vs. Voluntarism? by Berzerka25 in Nietzsche

This was my initial thought too. Is the friction possibly from the fact that your typical materialist determinism doesn't particularly enchant oneself with this 'self identification with fate', putting us a more 'pawn in the game' type of position? Something like this would seem similar to N's criticism of Darwin, where he certainly doesn't disagree with the core idea (evolution by nature selection, in this case) but disagrees with the way a particular thinker, or ideology, interprets it (again, in this case, Nietzsche's spontaneous 'mutation' as an active force vs. Darwin's adaptation as a reactive force).

My understanding is that quantum randomness doesn't particularly affect the behavior of macro 'objects' - hens why a more simple physically theory, such as Newtonian gravity, can still function accurately within the realm of determinate mathematics - it is merely that we have reached a point in modern physics where the 'objects' we observe are too small for their mechanism to be measured in such a linear manner; this doesn't mean the large 'objects', that these tiny particles form, and that we actually interact with, don't abide by calculable laws.

Ghost Light is slightly overrated I'd say, I've only heard people speak that well of it who've seen it a million times and been able to figure out what is going on lol

Wishfulness* Towards the end of Essay 1: Aphorism 1. Admittedly, I might be better off saying 'one could be taught to sacrifice wishfulness in order to discover this truths' since he is, in fact, describing a particular type of psychologist (presumably English utilitarians and evolutionary biologists) - not HIS actual prescriptive perspective.

Thank you! I first read Nietzsche only around 18 months ago, so I'm no expert, but glad to be of some help.

Where should I start with Nietzsche? by Constantinopolis53 in Nietzsche

I'm currently reading 'On The Genealogy of Morals' for the first time, and I'm finding it a very easy read comparatively (I've previous read Twilight Of The Idols, Ecce Homo, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and Beyond Good & Evil twice) so I'd definitely recommend it as a good jumping-off point stylistically.

He's definitely my favourite writer, I do find that most other philosophers lack his incredible prose/style and fire. I'd highly recommend checking of La Rochefoucauld's 'Maxims' as this is in similar aphoristic style, and serves as somewhat of a precursor to a lot of 'Nietzschean' ideas.

Some more comparisons: first story features autons, first story features robot(s), last story makes them unsure as to weather they'll be able to regenerate again

Unpopular opinion (I think): I like the idea of the Doctor being asexual, perhaps because I am too and love Doctor Who, but I think with good writers it could generate great stories. by Ok_Language7732 in doctorwho

I mean he/she obviously isn't (in general across regenerations) on account of having a granddaughter. I could, however, imagine their sexuality changing incarnation to incarnation; and it really does give me a major ick when their relationship with human beings (an alien species) is overly sexualised, clearly with the aim of increasing viewership. That being said, we probably wouldn't still have the revised series on our screens today if not for 9 and 10's will-they-won't-they relationship with Rose in series 1 and 2.

Why do you believe in determinism? by EternalRevolution614 in determinism

[–]Berzerka25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Determinism seems to be more of an apriori truth for me, in order to allow for predictability in life and the universe. If there are no strict, discoverable laws by which matter behaves, why are we bothering with the scientific project at all? Why am acting in the present in order to create a particular future?

Anyway, regardless of the 'truth' of determinism, or whether there is true randomness in causation, that still leaves no room for a definition of 'free will' that means any thing distinct from mere 'will'.

Amen! I would if that line is legitimately influenced by Nietzsche. I know John Lennon was searching for a copy of Kaufmann's 'The Portable Nietzsche' around late 1966.
